The artist Ljuba Markovic captures the architecture and history of this Serbian city with this collection. A green leatherette portfolio case houses several items: a CD, a collection of 36 postcards, a booklet describing each postcard image, a framed plaque, a collection of 50 limited edition prints, a description of each print, and a timeline of Nis. The prints are preceeded by a document stating that this is one of 99 copies of the collection of drawings "Vedutas of the Old Nis." It is sealed in wax and signed by the artist. n.p.: n.p., 1530. Fine. An exquisite small leaf taken from a French Book of Hours from the early 16th century. Books of Hours were personal prayer books and were not only works of art, but cultural documents of their time. They were made of the finest materials, by the best artisans, for the small portion of the population that could both appreciate and afford them. The book's Latin text is printed in black, with horizontal gold ink ornaments at the end of each sentence. The text has a gold ink border with an ornamental bow at its bottom. The border and ornaments are highlighted with a thin line in red ink. There are fourteen initials in gold and black. There are thirteen two-initials and one of three lines. This leaf is for pages 161-162 of the book. It measures 2.5 x 4.25 inches. In fine condition with the outline of the intials from one page visible on the other page. MANUS/031723.

Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915) was an American author, artist and engineer born in Baltimore, Maryland, a descendant of Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He became a contractor in New York City and did much work for the Federal government, including the stone ice-breaker at Bridgeport, Connecticut, the jetties at the mouth of the Connecticut river, the foundation for the Bartholdi Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, and the Race Rock Lighthouse off New London, Connecticut. His vacations were spent sketching in the White Mountains, in Cuba, in Mexico, and afterwards in Venice, Constantinople and Holland. Vestiges was conceived in Iceland where Anne was an artist-in-residence in April and May 2018. This striking work includes folded, sewn, dyed, and printed crinoline cloth pieces accompanied by text. They beautifully capture the almost intangible nature of vestiges - things disappearing or no longer in existence, printed by Diane Jacobs of the Scranton Press in Portland. The book's wrap-around cover is white crinoline. The book is printed with Weiss Italic type on Mohawk Superfine paper. The text is hand-written and authored by the artist as are the hand-dyed fabric manipulations (from the colophon).
