Description:
Manchester & London: Thomas Agnew & Messrs. Ackermann, 1842. Engraved on heavy wove paper, sheet: 24 3/4 x 43 1/4 inches with publisher's blind stamp. A grand group portrait of an aristocratic coursing party near Liverpool. The event was known as the Waterloo Cup Coursing Meeting, and it took place on the Sefton Estate at Altcar near Liverpool. Depicted among the participants are the Earl and Countess of Sefton, Lord Douglas and Lord Eglinton. A reviewer commented on the fine drawing of the greyhounds, and in fact the whole ensemble of sportsmen and women, horses and dogs are beautifully rendered by Ansdell. Richard Ansdell (1815-1885) was a native of Liverpool. He established himself as one of the best painters of country life and sport and soon had a national reputation. This led him to move to London in 1847 where he enjoyed continued success adding portraiture to his repertoire. Samuel William Reynolds, Jr. (1794-1872) was the son of and successor to S. W. Reynolds. They were both engravers of… Read More

Description:
1849. Engraved by G. T. Payne, image: 18 5/8 x 36 3/8 inches; sheet: 25 1/2 x 40 1/4 inches. Backed on board. A grand group portrait of a coursing party with Stonehenge in the background. Proof before titles. A panoramic view of a gathering of British sportsmen in the rolling hills near Stonehenge at a specific event in 1847, which epitomises a significant aspect of British cultural life. The vast outdoors, the handsome and well-cared for dogs and horses and the hardy sportsmen form a unique ensemble, here beautifully depicted by William Barraud, perhaps the best animal artist of the period.

Description:
Philadelphia: Ke & Biddle, 1836. Hand-coloured lithograph. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's "Indian Tribes of North America": "One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians" (Field), "a landmark in American culture" (Horan), and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. Waemboeshkaa (dates unknown) was an Ojibeway chief and a signer of the Fond du Lac treaty of 1826. McKenney was struck by the poverty of most of the tribespeople in attendance and so was deeply impressed by Waemboeshkaa, who had prepared rather regal adornments for the occasion. The crown-like cap was made of Mallard drake breast feathers and woodpecker beaks and feathers. His bracelet, necklace and pipe harmonized in color and design. His bearing too, according to McKenney, accorded with his exceptional costume. The peace or sacred pipe held a much higher place in Native life than was or is understood among whites. In part because of the health hazards discovered to derive from… Read More

Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1836. Hand-coloured lithograph. In excellent condition apart from the usual light off-setting in the plate. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. The son of Shappa Indian Red Thunder, Wa-Na-Ta (d. 1848) also known as 'The Charger', was born on the Elm River in South Dakota and was a revered chief of the Yanktonai tribe, which hailed from a village on the St. Peter's River. Along with his father, he fought for the British in the War of 1812, in which he distinguished himself as a loyal and valiant warrior. Despite the defeat of the British, Wa-Na-Ta was awarded for his exceptional heroism in a reception at the English court with a promotion to captain in the British army. Description:
[Philadelphia: published by the author, 1835. Lithograph, coloured by hand, printed by Lehman & Duval of Philadelphia. A striking image from Lewis's "Aboriginal Portfolio." Waa-Pa-Shaw, better known as Wabasha, was chief of a Kiowa tribe of the Mdewakanton Sioux. He was treated with great respect by all the Sioux. He recommended non-resistance to the whites, though he and his people were removed twice to new settlements. He was described by General Whiting in 1820 as a small man with an eyepatch, "but who walked about with the air of an ancient king." (Horan). He was the first Native signer of the Prairie de Chien Treaty, indicating his importance among the assembled chiefs. The Aboriginal Portfolio represents the first attempt to publish a collection of portraits of North American Indians preceding the works of Catlin, and McKenney and Hall. It is also one of the earliest large projects in American lithography, and one of the first large visual works to deal with subjects beyond the east coast of… Read More

London: Thomas McLean, 1828. Hand-coloured aquatint by Richard G. Reeve. Wove paper watermarked: "J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1827" Haywagon and the Highgate Archway, built in 1812. A very handsome, interesting scene near the village of Highgate, Middlesex. According to legend, the villagers were tired of the racket caused by wagons making the difficult climb up and down the Highgate Hill, so they put in the archway with its aquaduct style bridge atop. In this scene, a haywagon drawn by eight white horses makes its way toward London. The driver walks along beside it with his dog.

Description:
Fort Leavenworth, Kansas: George Catlin, 1832. Watercolor. Watercolor over graphite, heightened with white gouache on cream wove paper, inscribed "Chief of the Ottoes" in the bottom right-hand corner, and numbered "117" in the top right-hand corner. Image: (9 5/8 x 6 3/8 inches). Framed: (18 x 14 1/2 inches). An early, previously unrecorded watercolor study of a Native American chief for a George Catlin oil painting now held in the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. "[I] painted thus many of my pictures in water colors during my 8 years travels, and most, though not all of them, I enlarged onto canvas, wishing my collection to be all in oil painting." - George Catlin During the 1830s, Catlin, a self-taught artist from Philadelphia, traveled through the Great Plains of the American West, absorbing the ways of the Native American tribes he found flourishing there. Over the next decade, Catlin embarked on a journey to create a faithful visual study of the members, customs, and surroundings… Read More

Philadelphia: J.T. Bowen, 1841. Hand-coloured lithograph. Very good condition. A fine image from McKenney and Hall's 'Indian Tribes of North America': `One of the most important [works] ever published on the American Indians' (Field),` a landmark in American culture' (Horan) and an invaluable contemporary record of a vanished way of life. Also known as the Snake, Wakawn (d. 1838) was a bold, indomitable Winnebago chief, who fought in the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe as part of the Indian Confederacy formed by the Shawnee leader Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa to protect native lands from the encroachment of Western settlers. He again fought with Tecumseh in support of the British in the War of 1812, after which he made peace with the United States. He reversed his previous positions and began to advocate Indian displacement and insist that Winnebago children be educated at the Indian School at Prairie du Chien. This earned him the respect of the U.S. government, but resulted in harsh censure from… Read More

Description:
Washington D.C.: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1916. Large folding nautical chart, printed on heavy paper stock. Uncolored. A rare original coastal survey of the central Florida coast around Cedar Keys. Established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807 as the Survey of the Coast, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was the United States' first civilian scientific agency. This agency has followed its mission to survey the U.S. coastline, create nautical charts of the coast, and help increase maritime safety since its founding, and has often played fascinating roles in significant chapters of U.S. history. It served in all theaters of the Civil War in the service of the Union Army and Navy, pioneered acoustic exploration in the wake of the sinking of the Titanic, and during WWI it worked to detect enemy submarines. In addition, this agency worked to survey and produce detailed maps and renderings of the U.S. coast. These nautical survey maps (commonly referred to as… Read More

Description:
Etched, printed in sepia, signed lower right, remarque of cowboy on horseback in pencil lower left. "Walpi, Arizona" written lower left in pencil in another hand. Superb and unusual Borein etching of the famous Hopi Pueblo. Edward Borein was a largely self-trained Western artist, who, having been a cowboy for a number of years, usually depicted the joys and hardships of cowboy life. Depictions of Native American architecture are quite rare in his work. The most successful of these is unquestionably this view of Walpi, Arizona, one of the oldest continuously occupied towns in the United States. Standing near the long bridge-like entry, we are impressed by the massive stone walls and the very permanent looking pyramidal town in the distance. Borein manages to convey the grim determination of the builders and inhabitants, who defiantly survive enemies of all sorts, natural and human. Galvin 215.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1875. Hand-coloured lithographs, on thick paper, after Catlin, drawn on stone byJohn McGahey, printed by Day & Haghe. Sheet size: 16 x 22 1/4 inches. One of the six rare additional images from Catlin's 'North American Indian Portfolio', one of the most important accounts of Indigenous American life. The War Dance, or 'dance of the braves', "is peculiarly beautiful," Catlin writes, "At intervals they stop, and one of them steps into the ring, and voiciferates[sic] as loud as possible, with the most significant gesticulations, the feats of bravery which he has performed during his life...and at the same time carries his body through all the motions and gestures, which have been used during these scenes when they were transacted. At the end of his boasting, all assent to the truth of his story...and the dance begins again." Phildelphia: E. C. Biddle, 1834. Hand-coloured lithograph. Very good condition. Based on a painting by P. Rindisbacher McKenney and Hall's "Indian Tribes of North America" has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of Native Americans. The portraits are largely based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Keokuk, and Black Hawk. After six years as Superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the Western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking… Read More

Description:
London: Published by Henry Morland, 1806. Colour printed mezzotint. In excellent condition apart from some skillfully mended tears. Image size: 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. A lovely colour printed impression of Ward's idyllic print reflecting the English rural ideal, after a painting by George Morland. The term "warrener" refers to someone adept at catching rabbits in their warrens, which the man in this image has clearly done. Bringing home today's sustenance is one element of rural life that Morland worked so prodigiously to demonstrate to his more sophisticated audience. It was a world that grew increasingly foreign to the urbanized world as the 19th century approached. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious… Read More
