This archive includes three issues of "The Motor Cycle & Cycle Trader" July 10, 1914, April 2, 1915, December 30, 1915, and two issues of "The Motor Cycle" January 13, 1916, and October 17, 1918. Each magazine measures 8.5" x 11". With the invention of the first internal combustion engine in the 1880s, the motorcycle saw a rapidly increasing demand as a new means of travel with the first major mass produced motorcycles emerging in the early 1900s for leisure and sport. However, with the bourgeoning first world war, the first motorcycle was used in 1916 to replace cavalry units. Each image has a contemporary caption underneath as well as a longer description of the contextual history of the image en verso. Most photos are located throughout Europe showing primarily occupied territories in Germany, France, and England with most soldiers being of the Allied Forces such as Americans, British, Russians, Serbians, Italians, and French, which includes the French Army of Africa, and Moroccans. There are a few images of German soldiers as well as their tanks and artillery, some having been captured by British soldiers or destroyed by the affects war. One image shows two Allied heroes French President Raymond Poincare and Marshall Joseph Joffre visiting the officers' quarters on the Somme Front. [African American Military] [WWII] African American soldiers photographed in uniforms with heavy artillery during the European and Middle Eastern Theatre of W.W.II. 18 black and white silver gelatin photographs, measure 2.5" x 3.5" to 5" x 7" with most measuring somewhere in the middle. Five photos have inscriptions en verso identifying the soldiers who are also shown in other photos. Many of the men are shown in uniform together and individually, some with artillery and trucks, on and off army bases. A few photos show some Black soldiers outside with machine guns mounted on tripods in a semi-arid terrain with palm trees and clay huts in the background, one with a domed temple in the far back, showing to be from the Middle Eastern theatre. While Jim Crow laws and negative racial attitudes still ran rampant in the United States, many of the Europeans greeted African American G.I.s with respect and camaraderie. As many as a thousand Japanese-American citizens were held at Camp Livingston as part of the War Relocation Authority's wartime internment program.This image documents a rare aerial view of the short-lived American military installation at Camp Livingston. The camp opened in 1940 and closed in 1945. It was originally created to train field artillery regiments during World War II stationing some Infantry Divisions, along with various other field artillery and other Army units. However, the camp most notably became an internment camp to house thousands of Japanese, German, prisoners of war only a year after this photograph was taken. Archive of 11 letters from or to Colonel Albert Park Shaw, starting in March 1943 at Ft. Benning, GA and concluding just after the war in occupied Hokkaido. Shaw's career spanned three decades and he consistently was in active duty from W.W.II all the way through Vietnam, including being in the initial assault waves for the invasion of Kuzon in the Philippines with the 6th Infantry Division. Letters mostly sent from Shaw to his fiancé or Dad. At Luzon, Shaw writes to his fiancé about one of his friends being shot down by the Japanese" I also wrote you about Lt. Lester Brown from Pittsfield who was shot down over Jap too. He was from the same Sqdrn. (the 341st of the 304th Bomb Group). WALTON, Izaak, The Compleat Angler; or The Contemplative Man's Recreation: Being Discourse of Fish and Fishing for the Perusal of Anglers Illustrated by Gorsline, Douglas W. New York, The Limited Editions Club. 1948. Hardcover slipcase. 9" x 13". This book was first published in 1653 by Richard Marriot in London. Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century. This is a classic work on art and joys of fishing in prose and verse, prominently collected amidst anglers and fishing enthusiasts. Complete with multiple black and white illustrations throughout of various types of fish, illustrations of men fishing by a lake, vying for women's attention, landscapes, amongst a variety of other images. Very good condition, some light staining to some pages, but overall, pages, text, and images are crisp and clear with minor wear and fading to edges of slipcase.

Archive of 12 W.W.II era photographs of Black servicemen in uniform and off-duty with their friends and spouses. Most photos are from 1944-45. Black and White or Sepia tone photographs ranging in size measuring about 7" x 5". These photos take place primarily at social occasions, often at a table at a night club or fancy restaurant, and captures African American men and women having dinners and fun with friends and family many of whom are military personnel in full uniform. They include 2 photos of a young black Navy sailor in uniform at a restaurant along with his family. Other pictures capture civilians in suits and ties, or Army soldiers in uniform with family and friends. Everyone is well dressed and many women are wearing hats as was the fashion in the 1940's. [African American] [World War II] Archive of 40 photos and several documents from a black soldier named Ted Carter in the all black 43rd Amphibian Truck Battalion, Transportation Corps, during the Iwo Jima campaign. Black and white silver gelatin photographs, mostly around 3.5" x 5". Includes a map of Iwo Jima with major features labeled, such as the 43rd Battalion's base, Japanese defensive positions, the "Jap last stand" and "Jap General's cave". Includes a 50 yen bill from Imperial Japan. One photo depicts the Iwo Jima landing, showing American troops seeking cover under a sand bank to avoid incoming Japanese fire. We can see patches of smoke and and fortifications on the beach, as well as landing crafts on the shore. In the background is Mt. Suribachi, where the Marines would later raise the American flag, a moment captured in the iconic photo by Joe Rosenthal, a reporter from the AP that was on the scene. Archive of 12 silver gelatin photos pasted to dark grey board and clipped from original photo album of WWI era soldiers and jockeys partaking in horse racing. Measurements are 3" x 4" with the photos themselves measuring 2.5" x 3.25". Horses were vital in military usage during the First World War and played a major role economically as they reached their peak of 21.5 million by 1920. Between the First and Second World Wars the importance of the horse in commerce and agriculture began to decline. Whilst this was going on, the sport of horse racing continued to grow in popularity, perhaps partly as a result of this general decline. Horse racing was one an international favorite sporting pastime with dozens of courses all over the world. This photo archive shows a particular race in motion with jockeys who seem to be competing with a group of WWI soldiers in officer caps and uniform. Photos have minor wear to edges and corners. Overall in very good condition, images are crisp and clear.

The American navy focused on countering enemy U-boats in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea while convoying men and supplies to France and Italy. This photo album which dates back to 1915 depicts a crew of young women studying nursing, as well as soldiers, airplanes, and family life in locations across the USA. 184 silver gelatin photographs ranging in size from cutouts at 1.5" x 1" inches to a couple full page size 11" x 8" photos, with most around 4" x 2.5" inches. Album is 11.5" x 8.5" inches and has textured black covers and a black interior with photos adhered and a tight binding. This album depicts a young nurse that is one in a class of 14 young women who were studying nursing around the time of the First World War. They are depicted in the operating room in several photographs though most photographs display the treasured friendship these women had. One photo displays the nurses behind a sign that states "Smallpox!", which was a a recurrent and deadly public health issue throughout the first half of the 20th century and pushed many to enter the nursing field. Full leather covers have a sepia toned photograph of a sailboat on the front. The album depicts a family in 1910s-20s Long Beach, the surrounding area, as well as some shots of the Desert Southwest. A rare aerial view of the short-lived American military installation at Camp Livingston, Louisiana. The camp opened in 1940 and closed in 1945, and was created to train field artillery regiments during World War II (hence the "F.A." in the title of the photograph). Camp Livingston was used to house a thousand Japanese-American citizens as part of the War Relocation Authority's wartime internment program during WW.II. In addition to the Japanese-American citizens , the camp also held Japanese, German, and Italian prisoners of war. We could not find any copies of this photograph located in OCLC at the time of this writting. A few small chips and short tears. Mild scuffing and soiling. About Good condition. Important documentation of the Japanese-American Internment locations.

North Africa Campaign W.W.II American GI's Well captioned photo album with 66 black and white photos and ephemera including currency, tickets, and clippings. This Photo album was put together by an American GI in the in the Army Air Force in the North African theater in 1943. This album consists of nine disbound album pages measuring 14" x 11.5" each, with no covers. Photos mostly measure between 2.5" x 2" to 3.75" x 3.25". Following the Operation Torch landings in November 1942, the Allies were able to advance into Tunisia, but only in single division strength. The US troops were elements of US 1st Armored Division. The Allies were halted by the Germans and pushed back having advanced eastwards to within 19 miles of Tunis. Many shots of the aftermath of the North African campaign that express the hard fought and destructive nature of this pivotal Allied victory. This archive belonged to Captain Richard L. Witmer of York, Pennsylvania, an officer in the 87th Regiment of the Caribbean Coastal Artillery Command of the US Army during WWII. Its contents include 385 printed and manuscripts pages of notes, lessons, assignments, and documents, primarily from Witmer's education in officer academy. He is instructed and takes notes on a variety of topics, from chemical warfare and ballistics to ordnance and mess hall management. His notes often include hand-drawn diagrams, graphs, and doodles. During Witmer's time in the 87th Army Coast Artillery Corps (CAC), he was primarily stationed for domestic defense along the Gulf Coast. WWII-era Black troops Archive of six black and white photos measuring 4" x 6" to 8" x 10". Four of the photos depict the Black soldiers on a ship, during the journey overseas. One press photo caption indicates they are headed for England, while the other three are from the same set and depict military personnel of all races aboard the deck of a large cruise ship. The soldiers appear overjoyed; this could suggest that for some of them, they are headed home for good. The press photo of the black soldiers on their way to England shows them crouched in a circle betting on a game of dominoes "Somewhere on the Atlantic." Another striking image shows a group of soldiers congregating in a compact space, possibly the cabin of a ship, looking on at something and some with pens and pads in their hands, possibly another instance of gambling to pass the time on a long sea voyage. Approximately 150 black and white photos ranging in size from 2.25" x 3.5" inches to 10" x 8" inches, with most being 3.5" x 2.5". A few large 10" x 8" inch photos. Album size is 11" x 14.5" inches. Album has red leatherette covers but is unbound and some photos are loose. Constantine was a member of the Ohio National Guard's 136th Field Artillery battalion. Over half of the notebook is written on, around 30 pages. Belonging to a K. Nairn of the 50 I.T.W. Complete with meticulously detailed notes and illustrations and diagrams of the 303 Browning, its bullets, chamber, and loading mechanisms. he writes the different types of bullets used by the 303, such as ball, armor piercing, incendiary, and tracer rounds, as well as the gun's specs: length, weight, barrel length, rifling, rate of fire, and recoil. The .303 Browning was a hugely important weapon in the British arsenal, and can be credited with turning the tide in the Battle of Britain, when it was used to devastating effect as a wing-mounted gun on RAF Spitfire and Hurricane fighters.
