Description:
Chicago: Will Rossiter, c.1924.. Pictorial wrappers, stapled. 9 x 12 inch format. 16pp. Some wear to spine and corners, but a very good copy of an extremely fragile and cheaply-produced book. Ownership signature and stamp on front cover. The cover features a picture of Ralph Maddison, billed as "The Premier Canadian Tenor", "The Singing Miner", and "Canada's Greatest Ballad Singer!". Maddison was from Springhill, Nova Scotia, and as a young man he worked in the mines there. He became a successful singer and toured in the vaudeville circuit for about 20 years, apparently being very popular in Western Canada. In the mid-30s he returned to Springhill and worked in the mines until his death in 1940. This book contains songs by a variety of writers, presumably ones which were performed by Maddison at the time.

Description:
NY: Felt, 1872. First edition. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Brown coated end papers. One leaf of ads at rear. Modest shelf wear, some spotting of cloth, a couple of stains to two leaves (194 & 390), end papers a bit discolored; a solid very good copy in general. The author's name on the binding is given as "Orpheus C. Kerr", (under which name most of his works were published), and the facsimile signature of that name is on the front cover. An uncommon title by Newell, who in 1870 published "The Cloven Foot" - an American version of Dickens' EDWIN DROOD. Wright II: 1789. "The Walking Doll" looks to be an outlandish satirical work, which, in the words of the author: "shall possess and rival all the worst beauties of Dickens, Reade, Wilkie Collins, Thackeray, and Miss Braddon."

Description:
Montreal: Lovell, 1874. First edition.. Original brown cloth stamped in blind, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Brown coated end papers. Considerable wear to spine and corners, the back cover and last couple of leaves stained, foxing to early and late leaves; generally a very good copy otherwise. An undated ownership inscription on the front end paper is from Richmond, P.Q. A novel set in Canada, mainly in a village called Elmwood in Quebec. It has been postulated that this author is the same Harriet S. Caswell [1834-1909] who was the author of "Our Life Among the Iroquois Indians" (Boston, 1892); however, recent research suggests another possibility in the person of one Henry Sheldon Caswell, a schoolteacher who lived in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and died in 1900. In any case, a scarce book.
