1908. London, Duckworth & Co., 1908. 8vo. 2 vols. Publisher's original green cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, top edges gilt; pp. xx, 309; x, 297; photogravure frontispiece of Doughty to vol. I, wood-engraved frontispiece to vol. II, 1 double-page map; some chipping to head and tail of spines, foxing at front and rear of each volume; this is a rare inscribed copy presented by the author to G.G. Coulton, signed to that effect on the half title of volume I. First abridged edition. Doughty's Travels in Arabia Deserta was first published in 1888, but abridged by Garnett in the present form. A covering letter from Ruth Robbins contains important information regarding the book's provenance: 'it bears Doughty's own inscription, as he personally gave it to the well-known medieval scholar, Prof. G.G. Coulton of Cambridge. Coulton and Doughty met in Eastbourne, and apparently got on very well together (Doughty did not like meeting people on the whole). They spent many hours in conversation, I have been… Read More

London, P.S.King And Son Ltd, 1938. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt and with Royal Welsh Fusiliers initials in gilt on front cover; pp. xvi, 613, [3], 27 leaves of maps at the end; cloth a little marked, otherwise very good. Very rare first edition, one of 500 copies printed of one of the best Great War books, with a literary contribution by Siegfried Sassoon, A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action, a chapter covering the period from March 12th to April 16th, 1917, which is considered an early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer. The chapter in this volume 'written early in 1926, except for his diaries of 1918, was the first prose Sassoon wrote about the war' (Keynes). The compiler of reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion was not a fan of Graves' Goodbye to all that and prevented him from contributing. Robert Graves figures several times in texts by others, as does Sassoon. Dunn, of Glasgow, appears in Sassoon's Sherston's Progress as Dr Munro. John… Read More

1969. Lupus Music, 1969. 8vo. Original decorative paper-covered boards, with dustwrapper; pp. 63; slightly rubbed to extremities, internally very clean and bright, very good. Provenance: ffep inscribed by Marc Bolan "Deepest love/ Marc Bolan/ x", with ownership signature of Jeannette Montgomery (b. 1956) the revered photographer of the New York downtown art scene, known since her marriage as Jeannette Montgomery Barron. When asked by the Fashion Style blog who she was 'totally into' as a teenager, Mongomery Barron replied : 'T. Rex' (http://ranchodascoelhinhasportugal.blogspot.com/2014/02/q-jeannette-montgomery-barron.html). First edition. Scarce signed. Heavily inspired by Tolkien, this book of poetry was issued before Bolan hit international superstardom with T. Rex. Nevertheless, he was a big enough domestic star to sell 40,000 copies of this book, which was quickly reprinted and became Britain's biggest selling volume of poetry of the year. There is a nod to his band in the very last… Read More

Description:
1997. Viking. 1997. 8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A fine copy. First edition. "Gavin Young first visited Vietnam in 1965 at the time of the American invasion. He was to spend most of the next ten years there as a reporter for the Observer, but also as a kind of honorary citizen and adopted son, forming unusually close ties with the 'delightful, infinitely patient Vietnamese people' and with one family in particular...In a Wavering Grace one of our most distinguished travel writers offers us an unusual and affecting memoir, a unique view of a tragic land. It is the tale of one man's relationship with a people and a place, but even more it is the tale of one indomitable family, whose own lives read like a chronicle of twentieth century Vietnamese history." With a quantity of related material including three typed drafts of the work, dated May to July 1996 with manuscript corrections and amendments by Gavin Young, Peter Carson and Gritta Weil (some on post-its). Each draft is… Read More
