The jacket (protected in a mylar cover) has some minor wear to the head and foot of the spine and there is some very minor creasing and chipping to the bottom edge of the upper cover. But overall the jacket is in very good condition and the boards and contents are in fine condition. On 10th January 1957 T.S.Eliot married Valerie Fletcher. The ceremony, at St Barnabas Church, Kensington took place at 6.15am "by special license", Eliot said, "from the Archbishop of Canterbury in order to evade the press". Eliot was famously shy, reserved and prickly so this somewhat cloak and dagger approach to his second marriage is unsurprising. Once the news was out, though, Eliot seemed to change and his last few years (he died in January 1965) were, everyone agreed, including Eliot himself, blissfully happy. In pictorial paper covers, some wear and a repaired tear to front cover but overall in very good condition. Bound into blue boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Ten pages of text (in German) and nineteen photographs. Undated, this appears to be an abridged, smaller version of the book that accompanied the 1925 film made by Prager in praise of the beautiful and athletic body. The film and these photographs taken from it profess to be about sporting prowess: there are images of the runner Paavo Nurmi and the American high-jumper Harold Osborn. But these are squeezed in at the end after several photographs of naked and semi-naked girls engaged in "rhythmic gymnastics". Some poses set in an imaginary ancient Greece encourage us to make the connection between nudity, classicism and athletics. �

South Africa . Wooden sign (940x170mm). Metal plate screwed to each end, Painted brown with white lettering, some traces of blue paint showing through. Cracked along the centre but still holding. These unnerving signs were perhaps the most obvious manifestation of the day to day humiliation of "Petty Apartheid". Politics, as it affects ordinary people in their ordinary lives, takes place at a mundane level, apparently far removed from the machinations of the powerful. Political power, at its most basic and most pernicious, is the state telling you which bus to travel on, which beach to swim on and which bench to sit on. This sign is a political statement. It was removed, as an act of political protest from a bench in Kalk Bay on the Cape Peninsula on 15th March 1986. On the back is written in white ink "15.3.86 S.A.R. (rescued by) Giles. Kalk Bay". Quarter calf, original paper covered boards, rubbing and wear to edges and corners with much of the paper covering worn. Rebacked, red morocco label, lettered in gilt. Foxing and browning and some ink marks, small tear to corner of E4 with no loss of text. Front pastedown has the ownership inscription of "Mrs Anne Cave, Barking Alley, 1761" and, opposite, on the recto of the front endpaper is inscribed "Elisbeath (sic) Castell, I.D". William Kenrick was a literary chancer. In 1751, Robert Dodsley had published, with great success, The Oeconomy of Human Life, a collection of short essays on correct moral and social behaviour, purportedly written by a Chinese philosopher. Arthur de Capell Brooke, from a land-owning family and the son of a baronet resigned his army commission after the Battle of Waterloo and embarked on a life of adventure and travel. In May 1820, he began his first serious journey. This was an overland trip through Sweden and Norway to the Northern Cape. He was almost certainly the first Englishman to make this trek, Northern Scandinavia being generally regarded as terra incognita. One does not meet much Crabbe today, save for his poem 'The Borough' with its tale of Peter Grimes, which inspired a 29-year-old Benjamin Britten to return to England, and Suffolk (where Crabbe, too, was born and raised). Such an occasional, vicarious encounter does little justice to the fame Crabbe enjoyed in his lifetime.
