The play originally appeared in the November 1938 issue of Russkie Zapiski, a Russian emigre review published in Paris. It was translated into English by Navokov's son, Dmitri. Field 1072. New York: Dodd, Mead & Co., 1901. An octavo, 111pp., bound in original decorative green cloth, designed by Margaret Armstrong. Top edge gilt. Large portions of both covers and flaps of dust wrapper present, lacking spine panel. The book is in very good condition, except for a tiny pierce in the paper of the title page, affecting two letters in the "ga" in Margaret Armstong. Illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy..superb Art Nouveau borders in green and black.

New York: Random House, (1955). 8vo. This is a pristine copy, the white cloth is flawless with no soil, wear or marks of any kind. The price-clipped dust wrapper has some barely noticeable laminate separation but is unworn, with no chip or tears of any kind. A very attractive copy. Cloth

Westminster (London): Archibald Constable and Company, 1895. Forty-eight volumes, 16mo., uniformly bound in quarter-vellum over olive green boards. The vellum spines are elaborately tooled in gilt with the Scottish lion surrounded by a handsome Art Nouveau design. Top edges gilt. Each volume with engraved frontispiece and title page. This set is fairly common in cloth but quite rare in the deluxe bindings of half-vellum. Aside from some minor soiling and wear, this is a fine treasure of a set, boldly handsome when seen side by side in the library. There are few things more satisfying in book collecting than the mellow warmth and rich glow of smooth vellum adorned with deep, old gilt..and this set certainly illustrates the point!

DeWolfe, Fiske & Co. Boston. Circa 1870 Twelve volumes, 8vo., bound in half smooth butterscotch calf over marbled boards. Marbled edges and gilt paneled spine. Illustrated throughout with steel engravings. Aside from some light edgewear, all volumes are in very good condition. This edition is often found offered in single volumes with condition problems. A handsome, substantial set, very warm and mellow looking.

Taped on the front cover is a typewritten statement regarding the collection of stories and that the paperback rights have been acquired by Vintage books. Covici, Friede, Publishers, New York, 1928. This is the third printing of this well-known classic work. It has been nicely rebound in a modernist style, half leather over paper covered boards. The spine is tooled in gilt with red labels. There is no binders stamp or ticket but the binding is of good quality. The leather is a rich purple crushed morocco and the paper covered boards have an abstract angular design. Some slight wear to the extremities and a few small scratches on the paper covered boards but overall a very attractive binding. The text is clean and unmarked. Laid in is an old sales ticket from 1981 from Brick Row Bookshop in San Francisco.

Methuen and Co. , London 1927 Original Dust wrapper, also fine. There is some browning on the free endpaper and offsetting from two contemporary news clippings that are attached to front and rear end leaves. Overall, a fine copy.

New York: The Viking Press, A Studio Book, (1983). Quarto. Softbound in coated paper . This is a fine copy of the first (softbound) edition. Linda Parry is a noted author and lecturer on the subject of textiles. This book is an important contribution to our understanding of the textile designs of William Morris, and his methods of manufacturing them. Well-illustrated.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1993. Uncorrected advance proof copy in the original orange wrappers. A fine copy save for some slight fading to the spine.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1903. A green cloth octavo with pictorial cover and lettering inorange and white. 353 pages plus extensive publishers catalog in back. Illustrated by Wal Paget. A clean copy, nearly unworn but with several places on the covers and spine with flecking and color loss. Definitely noticeable but still a respectable copy. Scattered faint foxing to endleaves otherwise clean and bright internally.

London an New York: John Lane: The Bodley Head, 1905. Lovely little 16mo. bound in scarlet cloth with gilt titles on upper cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Sixty-three pages, plus eight pages of publisher's ads. A fine bright copy of a scarce title in the body of Shakespearian studies. Six women are profiled: the writer's mother, Mary Arden; sister, Joan; two daughters, Judith and Susannah and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Hall. Illustrated with eight relating photographic images. Difficult to find in this exceptional condition.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1916. Five volumes, 12 mo., uniformly bound in three-quarter smooth brown calf over navy blue cloth. Gilt armorial device on upper covers, gilt rules and titles, top edge gilt. Only one volume of Frederick the Great present (of five). Rubbing along hinges and extremities..still an attractive little set. Included are the titles: Latter-Day Pamphlets, Translations from Museus, Tieck, Richter; The French Revolution, Sartor Resartus on Heoroes, Hero- Worship and the Heroic in History Past and Present; Frederick the Great and Wilhelm Meister.

London: John Murray, 1914. Eight volumes uniformly bound in cobalt blue cloth with gilt spine titles. The India Paper Edition in the original box. The box is very worn but is complete and has served its purpose well, preserving the books in fine condition. Boxed sets from this time period are very difficult to find, particularly with the books in such lovely condition.

Edinburgh: W. & R. Chambers, (circa 1880). Twelve volumes, uniformly bound in half-leather over pebbled cloth. Marbled edges, Portrait title page. All hinges rubbed and some quite tender. Still, a charming little set of Shakespeare..complete in 12 volumes.

New York Harper & Row 1970 First printing An octavo of yellow cloth and blue paper covered boards as issued. The book is fine with no wear or marks save for a small bookplate size picture pasted to the front free endpaper. The picture is a wall relief sculpture of an old man (Agathon?). There is also a slight bit of discolouration to the yellow endpapers, apparently from the glue used in the binding. The wrapper is bright with just a very slight bit of soil. $6.95 price unclipped.
