Presentation copy, inscribed by Smith on the title page, “To Bernie, Who, with his understanding and consideration contributed much to the doing of this book. Thanks Gene.” Although “Bernie” is unidentified, it might have been Bernard Freemesser, an instructor at the University of Oregon, where Smith taught in the summers of 1968 and 1969, or it could have been Bernie Quint, the design editor for Smith’s feature “Spanish Village” in Life Magazine. In what appears to be the same ink, Minor White’s name has been crossed out on the copyright page and the dust jacket price has been altered.

Presented by the author to an editor at his publishing house, “For__ __- with many thanks for your work on the drum, and for your patience, too - John Hersey.” Two holograph letters are laid in (one signed in full, the other signed simply as “John”) to the presentee, one of which, dated 1949, discusses promotional magazine appearances for this title.

New York: Wall Street Business School, 1930. First Edition of an uncommon book in a first edition, published with what one might call iffy timing. A fine copy in the rare dust jacket which has a few tiny chips. The front panel depicts a bull and a bear tangled in ticker tape.

New York: New Directions, 1948. First American Edition. An out-of-series copy of the signed edition of 25 numbered copies. Very nearly fine in a very worn publisher’s slipcase.

Boston: Excelsior Press (printers), 1936. First Edition. “Questions Left Unanswered by the Lowell Committee in the Sacco & Vanzetti Case And Their Pertinence in Understanding the Conflicts Sweeping the World at this Hour.” Issued for Alumni at the Harvard Tercentenary. Other prominent names were involved in this introspective view of those events, given the threatening situation abroad. Nearly 100 years later, this case still incites strong passion and argument. It may turn out to be not only the case of the 20th century, but also of the 21st. Publisher’s wrappers; stained and worn; good.

London: Grant Richards, 1923. One of 200 numbered deluxe copies signed by Ernest Bramah. Some foxing and cover staining; endpapers browned; very good.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1940. First Edition. Front hinge cracked; very good in a good to very good dust jacket with wear and tear; in a custom clamshell box. An important volume; animator Robert “Tiger” West’s copy. A holograph note, signed by West as “Tiger” is laid in, describing how he drew for the film, purchasing this copy at Disney Studios and noting “it is enhanced by personal drawings made by many great animator directors of that era...” There are several inscriptions and over twenty drawings (most in color) by those who worked on the film, the best known of whom is probably Ward Kimball. West, who passed away in 2006, enjoyed a long career in animation, particularly with his involvement in Xerox cartoon processing.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1940. First Edition. Aside from a small spot on the bottom edge, very nearly a fine copy in a good dust jacket. Presentation copy, inscribed by Disney on the half-title, “To Esther With All Best Wishes, Walt Disney.” The recipient is purported to be Mexican actress Esther Fernandez, who worked briefly in Hollywood, although there doesn’t appear to be any particular known association with Disney.
