Description:
New Haven CT: Yale University. Very Good. 1948. (Vol. 1, No. 1). Journal. [moderate age-toning to spine and along edges of covers, light external soiling]. The inaugural issue of this long-running literary journal, which continues to this day, self-described as "the oldest English-language journal in the United States devoted to French and Francophone literature and culture." In this issue, devoted entirely to the topic of existentialism, Jean-Paul Sartre was given the first word, with excerpted scenes from his then-current play "Les mains sales." This was followed by sixteen essays on topics ranging from general discussions of existentialism to analyses of individual works by Sartre, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoir, and others. Notable contributors were Henri Peyre, Wallace Fowlie, and Herbert Dieckmann. (Seventy years later, the publication revisited the topic of existentialism in its issue no. 135-136.) .

Description:
New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas. Very Good+ in Very Good- dj. 1932. First American Edition. Hardcover. [moderately shelfworn, light-colored staining along front joint; jacket has paper loss at several corners, various small nicks and tears, some soiling and age-darkening to rear panel]. Somewhat phantasmagorical novel about a young fellow, the bastard son of a sailor, who grows up in a grimy quayside London cul-de-sac and falls in love with a "slum-sprite" girl whose lowlife father runs the titular pub. Returning some years later from military service, he finds that she's run off and become a celebrated chanteuse; he tracks her down to Rio, but she denies her younger identity, which of course forces him to spend the rest of the book trying to win her back. The New York Times reviewer, although admiring of the writer's style, was somewhat nonplussed by the novel, calling it "a novel from Mars . . . a strange creation -- terse, elliptical, obscure,… Read More

New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Very Good in Very Good- dj. (c.1943). possible 1st. Hardcover. [good solid copy, top corners bumped, moderate soiling to top/bottom edges; jacket shows wear at edges/corners, considerable age-toning, 3/4" chip at top of front panel (not affecting text), splitting and minor paper loss at hinges]. Wartime novel about the attempt to foil a plot against the U.S. Government -- not by enemy saboteurs, but by home-grown capitalist reactionaries whose hatred of FDR and the New Deal is so extreme that it leads them to construct an elaborate plot to sabotage the next Presidental election -- no matter who wins! -- by claiming election fraud on the part of the winning party, the idea being that Congress would then delegate governmental powers to a commission of military and civilian leaders, who would then proceed to (a) win the war in short order; and (b) organize capitalism on an international scale. It's interesting to note the jacket blurb claim that the… Read More

Description:
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. [good solid book, minimal shelfwear but lightly dampstained around base of spine; jacket shows a little wear at extremities and edges, but quite presentable in new mylar]. Sentimental novel about an elderly couple who become dependent on their adult children when the father loses his job and their resources are depleted. Although her reputation has not endured, Lawrence's novels of the 1930s, which focused on the problems faced by middle-class American families during the Great Depression, were both popular and critical successes. This book was the basis for the ultra-sentimental (but very moving) 1937 film MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW, directed by Leo McCarey and starring Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi as the story's elderly couple. (I've always loved the fact that while Moore was legitimately qualified, at the age of 61, to play "old," Beulah Bondi at the time was only 49… Read More

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1961). First Edition. Hardcover. [spine slightly turned, minor soiling to edges of text block; jacket is moderately edgeworn and lightly scuffed, one tiny tear at top of rear panel, internally tape-reinforced across top of spine]. Novel set in England during the inter-war years, "the story of the Cowdreys of Somerset, but most particularly of Alison, who found the courage and personal stamina to face a changing, sometimes ominous world, a world soon to be dominated by the march of Nazism." A free-spirited, non-conforming sort, she rebels against her upper-class upbringing, getting expelled from boarding-school, having a youthful romance with a French boy (alors!), then running off with an American journalist to participate in the Spanish Civil War. "Then, in the last interlude before the outbreak of hostilities and the involvement of England in its national struggle, she returned to London, matured by the… Read More

New York: Coward-McCann, Inc.. Very Good+ in Near Fine dj. (c.1969). First Edition. Hardcover. [nice tight copy, minimal shelfwear, bookplate on front endpaper, tiny light brown stain on bottom of text block, similar minor staining on rear endpaper (I'm thinking a careless tea-drinker); jacket very lightly soiled, with just a touch of wear at the spine ends, short diagonal creases at corners of rear flap]. "When Lydia Barnett set out for Greece as a summer traveling companion to a rich and feckless American woman, she hoped to strike an intimate acquaintance with the fabled ruins -- Mycenae, Rhodes, Tiryus -- she'd spent so many hours evoking for her sixth-grade pupils. Secretly, she'd even dreamed of an encounter that might lead to a summer romance. Before Lydia had been twenty-four hours in Greece, however, she found herself deep in more excitement -- and more danger -- than she'd ever in her wildest imagination bargained for." [light shelfwear, minor spotting to edges of text block, one-time owner's name stamped on front pastedown; jacket is very nice, slightly browned at spine but otherwise unblemished]. Set in Los Angeles, this light-hearted novel deals with a novelist-screenwriter and his three unruly teenage daughters. Like his protagonist, the author was a science-fiction writer and sometime-screenwriter (his most notable credit was THE TIME MACHINE, but he was also responsible for such lower-grade fare as MONSTER ON THE CAMPUS and THE LEECH WOMAN) -- and according to his IMdB data, he had (wait for it....) three daughters. .

"A sensitive novel of marital happiness achieved in a most unconventional manner," via a marriage of convenience between a woman who discovers she's pregnant shortly after breaking off her engagement, and a guy who's just been dumped by his own fiancée. New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Very Good+. (c.1937). First Edition. Hardcover. (in a new FACSIMILE dust jacket) [nice clean copy with just a touch of wear at the extremities, slight fading to spine cloth and a little dulling to the gilt lettering thereon]. (B&W photo frontispiece) Hart & Kaufman's classic Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a family of eccentrics, memorably filmed by Frank Capra in 1938. The movie won that year's Best Picture Academy Award, as well as earning Capra the Best Director award -- his third Oscar in a period of just five years and, as it turned out, his last as a feature film director. (His wartime documentary PRELUDE TO WAR was one of four shared recipients for the Best Documentary Feature award, however, in that category's inaugural year.) It's worth noting (at least I think so) that although none of the original Broadway cast appeared in the movie, Henry Travers, the original paterfamilias on stage (replaced by Lionel Barrymore for… Read More

New York/Los Angeles: Samuel French. Good+. (c.1947, 1942). Unstated edition. Softcover. [light handling wear, a little browning at spine, and some dampstaining which (for some weird reason) has affected only the four photographic plates and nothing else]. (4 B&W photographs) An early play by Williams -- the next-to-last of his so-called "apprentice plays" -- written in collaboration with his longtime friend Donald Windham. Originally written in 1942, it wasn't staged on Broadway until the Fall of 1945 (an event probably made possible by the success of "The Glass Menagerie," which had opened that Spring and was still running). It was the last Broadway appearance of Montgomery Clift before he decamped permanently for Hollywood; he appears in all four of the photos that illustrate this volume (albeit at a great distance in one of them). .

INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the 2nd front endpaper -- the inscribee being James Galanos, one of the eight up-and-coming stars of the 1950s fashion world who are profiled in the book. In fact, Galanos (1924-2016) would certainly rank as the most successful of the group, with a clilent list that included Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Diana Ross, Rosalind Russell, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, and numerous others. (no dust jacket) [a good solid copy, but with considerable external spotting, mostly to spine and front cover; internally clean and well-bound, but still best to consider this a reading copy only]. Novel about four college classmates (Yale, Class of 1928) who get together in 1934 to swap tales of their trials and tribulations in the intervening early Depression years. The New York Times critic was quite disdainful of the whole enterprise: "No argot is so flavorless, unimaginative, spurious, artificial and witless as the jargon of the campus. Mr. Ingham revels in it ad nauseam. If we take his word for it, Yale undergraduates, and particularly the class of '28, and especially [the novel's main characters] are youthful infantiles whose vainglorious deeds, puppy itches, childish mentalities and baby emotions can scarcely be taken seriously except as phenomena." The trials and travails of a young married couple, who "pull each other out of scrapes, fight one another's battles, and enjoy each other's society to the utmost. . . . They are always in dire financial straits, and their ingenious methods of extricating themselves would do credit to a mathematical wizard." A prolific and successful writer between the World Wars, Mackail's notoriety was eventually eclipsed by that of his older sister, the novelist Angela Thirkell -- although he's gotten some posthumous respect (and to judge from the blogosphere, a bit of a new fan base) thanks to the rediscovery and… Read More
