London: S. and J. Fuller, 1825. Oblong folio, 262 x 213 mms., pp. 15 [16 blank], engraved coloured frontispiece and 12 other coloured plates at end of volume, 39 uncoloured plates, 12 aquatint plates, contemporary half roan, marbled boards (very worn), leather label on front cover; previous bookseller's note stating "Replacement title/ Lacking one Plate," plates a bit soiled and foxed at extremities, front hinge broken with cover just holding on, a fair copy only, but he colour plates are fine. The artist and landscape painter David Cox (1783 - 1859) produced a number of manuals to teach drawing, so many in fact, that Stephen Wildman in his ODNB article on Cox affirms that the books were so influential that "they had the unforeseen consequence of training a whole generation of amateurs to imitate his style." FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 183 x 113 mms., pp. xl, 134 [135 - 136 Contents], later 18th century calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; short tear in fore-margin of front free end-paper, front joint meticulously restored, a very good to fine copy, with two contemporary or near-contemporary autographs on the title-age, "Sarah Townley" on the top margin and "W Townley" on the lower margin. Little is known of the dancing master John Essex (d. 1744), but by 1706 he was working in London at Drury Lane Theatre, and he published or contributed to various works on dancing. Small 8vo, pp. 86 [87 printer's imprint, 88 blank], portrait of author as frontispiece, facsimile of first page of ms. opposite page 19, contemporary (?original) marbled boards, linen spine, paper label (chipped); title-page browned from tissue guard, corners worn, a little shaken in casing. With the autograph "Rowena Ross" on the lower margin of the recto of the front free end-paper. Readers of a certain age will never get beyond the first line: "Mr Salteena was an elderly man of 42...." Of course, the author was nine when she wrote the work.

A very good copy. A nonce collection of 14 Religious Tract Society imprints, the longest of 44 pages, "The Young Cottager," by Legh Richmond being imperfect, having the first leaf removed. The contents are identical to the copy in the library at the University of Florida.
