London: 'The Yachtsman' Office,, 1898. A complete run of this short-lived, handsome, and highly ambitious journal of the yachting world. Complete sets are extremely uncommon, with listings on COPAC for the British Library and the University of Oxford Libraries only. The Yachting Monthly Magazine contains a wide range of articles on cruising, racing, yacht design, and voyages, including contributions by Erskine Childers, Linton Hope, Francis B. Cooke, James Meikle, and other eminent yachting figures of the late nineteenth century. It also includes plates after sketches by W. L. Wyllie and from photographs by Beken of Cowes. Volume I contains two articles by Erskine Childers detailing a cruise in East Friesland in 1897, which was to become the inspiration for his Anglo-German spy novel, The Riddle in the Sands (1903). Starting in Dover in August, Erskine sailed along the Dutch coast by way of the Frisian Islands, through the Kiel Canal, ending in Kiel in October. Erskine, an excellent seaman, made the… Read More

Description:
Paris , c.1910. Georges Goursat (1863-1934), known as Sem, attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable, particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition, in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This beautiful print is a part of Album de Sem published in Paris c. 1910. Eugène Adam was the president of Société Sportive d'Encouragement. Size: 560 x 360 mm Lithograph. Printed colour. Very good condition.

Description:
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons,, 1900. A fine copy of a travelogue by one of the first women admitted to the Royal Geographical Society First US edition, first printing, in exceptional condition, of this account of 15 months travelling through China, illustrated with many of the author's outstanding photographs. Her books, providing Western audiences with fresh perspectives on faraway places, made her by far the most influential woman traveller of the late 19th century. Isabella Lucy Bird (1831-1904), writing under the name "Mrs J. F. Bishop," journeyed around China in 1896-97, including eight months spent on the Yangtze, as part of a three-year tour of East Asia. In the present work, first published in the UK in 1899, she chronicles her journey along the river westwards from Shanghai, via Ningbo, Hangzhou, Nankou, and Yichang. At Wanxian, Bird left the river and headed due west to the territory of the Miao people, before heading south to pick up the river again at Chongqing. Throughout, she displays… Read More

Description:
New York: Edwin Levick & Rosenfeld Studios,, 1929-30. Fittingly smart tribute to a fine American yacht Superb pictorial record of the US yacht Yankee, built to compete for the right to defend the America's Cup. This celebration of the boat would certainly appear to be a one-off for a syndicate member and is comprised of photographs of the highest quality. Of the 19 prints 5 have the studio wet-stamps of the renowned Rosenfeld Studio showing through the linen backing verso, and another 6 the blind stamps of Edwin Levick, his negative numbers verso. Levick, truly the dean of American maritime photography, who trained the elder in Rosenfeld in the craft, died in 1929 these images would be among his last work. The uncredited shots which complete the album show no tapering off in quality, and include some wonderful images of the crew on and below deck, and one spectacular "abstract" of the mask viewed vertically from the deck. Yankee was one of 4 J-Class yachts launched in 1929 to meet Lipton's challenge… Read More

Crenshaw from George & Gertrude Woodward, Paris, May 9th 1928". An attractive provenance: Crenshaw (1884-1947) was the "creator and director of the Virginia 'bureau' of a wartime Paris club for American college men, organizer extraordinaire" (University of Virginia magazine). First secretary of the University of Virginia Alumni Association, Crenshaw was also a moving force in the establishment of a Memorial Association honouring US servicemen who has fought in the war and, more pertinently, a Pilots Association. Beijing: Lotus Court,, 1947. First edition, first printing, of this private press guide to the complex beliefs enshrined in the traditional Chinese calendar, listing auspicious and inauspicious activities for each day of the year, as well as important weather forecasts. Also included is a catalogue of "commonly accepted superstitions": the twitching of the right eye in the late evening foreshadows a new business opportunity, while the chatter of a magpie in the early morning brings wealth, happiness, and plenty to eat and drink. Alfred Koehn was a German diplomat and botany enthusiast who worked in Japan and then in China. In Beijing, he established a residence and publishing house, "The Lotus Court", in a traditional Beijing hutong. He wrote and printed a number of books on the two countries, many of which are now seldom encountered. Octavo (250 x 171 mm). Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1894. First edition of the fourth instalment in Lang's popular "Fairy Book" series, beautifully illustrated by Henry Justice Ford. The Yellow Fairy Book compiles tales from around the world, including well known stories such as "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". An extremely prolific artist, Ford (1860–1941) began exhibiting his paintings at the Royal Academy of Art in 1892. It was his work as book illustrator, however, that gained him worldwide fame in the 1880s and 1890s. Ford "concentrated on legends and folklore as subjects to illustrate and mixed carefully observed objects from the real world with fantasy creatures from an imaginary world in a very convincing way. His penwork is assured and clear and placed on the page with great decorative effect... A whole generation of Edwardians grew up on Ford's illustrations to Andrew Lang's Fairy tales" (Houfe, p. 140). London: John Lane; Roberts Bros., Boston,, 1895. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the publisher to his close friend, "Dr Pritchard from J.L." on the front free endpaper. The recipient was Dr Owen Pritchard, a fellow bibliophile who owned a house at 37 Southwick Street where he ran a successful practice. When John Lane was searching for new lodgings, Dr Pritchard offered him a room to rent above his surgery: "When, years afterwards, he [Lane] had become a successful publisher... he was still paying Pritchard ten shillings a week! Pritchard was a generous, large-hearted man. He would not put the rent up on a friend" (May, p. 29). After John Lane passed away, his nephews, Allen, Richard, and John, moved into the lodgings above Dr Pritchard's surgery. The Lane brothers founded Penguin Books in 1935. Yellow and White was the 16th book in Lane's Keynotes Series. Comprising 33 novels and short story collections, the series was published by John Lane between 1893 and 1897 in a distinctive… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Central Asian Society,, 1955. First appearance in print of the text of a lecture on the complex socio-cultural configuration of south-western Arabia by Britain's agent in the West Aden Protectorate, given to a packed meeting of the Royal Central Asian Society on 6 April 1955 in the midst of the failed attempt to overthrow Ahmad bin Yahya. Basil William Seager (1898-1977) joined the colonial administrative service in Aden in 1934, having previously served as pro-consul in Jeddah. Between 1934 and 1942, he was frontier officer in the Western Aden Protectorate (except for a two-year stint as the British resident in Sana'a), before being promoted to the rank of agent. During the 1948 Alwaziri coup, he worked behind the scenes to prevent outbreaks of anarchy in North and South Yemen. Drawing on his own experiences, Seager discusses the history and political organization of Yemen and expands on its current situation. "Frontier work was extremely interesting, if at time hazardous.... One… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Central Asian Society,, 1971. First edition, first impression, illustrated with two of the author's photographs, of this evaluation of recent Yemeni affairs by Christopher Gandy, Britain's minister in Taiz in 1962-3. Representing the Committee on Middle Eastern Trade, Gandy travelled to the YAR in 1970; here, he describes the consequences of the civil war and the socio-economic challenges and opportunities faced by the new republican government. Gandy (1917-2009) emerges as a staunch critic of the idea that the civil war was a popular revolution, arguing instead that Yemenis were "increasingly the victims of a power struggle waged on their soil between Egypt and Saudi Arabia" (p. 299). Concerning the prospect of the unification of the YAR with the DRY, Gandy is not hopeful: "I cannot personally ever see the two coming together. There is certainly no reason why the YAR should be in any hurry to do so. Now that Aden has ceased to be an international entrepot and port of passage, the… Read More

Description:
London: Henry Colburn,, 1828. First edition of this scarce romantic novel, association copy, attractively bound for George Agar-Ellis, first Baron Dover, who campaigned alongside the author for Catholic relief in Ireland as a fellow Whig MP. The publisher Henry Colburn issued many such "silver fork" novels, which provided a portrait of high society to a largely middle-class readership. Agar-Ellis (1797-1833) was a passionate supporter of liberal ideas and a noted patron of the arts. His edition of the Letters of Horace Walpole... to Sir Horace Mann (1833) was reviewed by Thomas Babington Macaulay as "the last of the useful and modest services rendered to literature by a nobleman of amiable manners, of untarnished public and private character, and of cultivated mind" (Edinburgh Review, vol. 58, p. 227). Constantine Phipps (1797-1863) served in the positions of Home Secretary, ambassador to France, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Upon arriving to Dublin in 1835, he "was welcomed by Roman Catholics.… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co.,, 1853. The first female vampire protagonist First edition of the first vampire novel by an American, and the first anywhere to introduce a female vampire protagonist. The work, written as hatchet job on the social reformer, hydrotherapy advocate, and feminist Mary Gove Nichols (1810-1884), includes deliberately ill-disguised characters; Nichols herself depicted as the predatory protagonist Etherial Softdown, an "oversexed evil vampire" (Cohen, p. 15). Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, often cited as the first female vampire novel, was not published until 20 years later, in 1872. Nichols is depicted here as an immoral creature who "sank her claws and her mouth into men she had a yen for, and coughed up blood to gain sympathy when it suited her" (ibid., p. 15). Charles Wilkins Webber (1819-1856) was a Kentucky author predominantly known for his western novels. He lived with Nichols, her husband Thomas Nichols, and a group of their left-wing followers in New York from… Read More
