Hollywood: Initiates of Master Occultists, 1931. 8vo, single leaf, [4]pp. Photograph of the author on front cover. Very good with some toning, creasing, and small edge tears. Interesting circular passed out at a lecture of traveling swami, Maneck K. Anklesaria (1899-1967), Grand President of "The Initiates of Master Occultists." Quotes from Buddha, Walt Whitman, and Warren Harding on the front, introduction and detail of each of the sixteen lessons, and advertisement for the courses and school on the back. Anklesaria spoke and established centers of thought in various cities, starting in California in the 20's, at the time of this circular having establishments in Hollywood, Long Beach, Spokane, Dallas, and Miami.

"Dr. Maneck of India," follower and friend of Gandhi, was part of the early 20th century American wave of Eastern thought and philosophy, including yoga, which was mainly taught via travelling lecture, tailored specifically for the American audience:

"Yoga was closely associated with movements such as New Thought, occultism, and Spiritualism, either openly, pseudonymously or with no indication of their origin at all. Conversely, Indian-born teachers of yoga in the United States were adept at employing different elements of American metaphysical religion into their own presentations and pointed their students towards Metaphysical Asia while offering them teachings taken very close to home."
(Suzanne Newcombe. "Yogis, Ayurveda and Kayakalpa - The Rejuvenation of PanditMalaviya."History of Science in South Asia, 5.2 (2017): 85-12)

An interesting and quite scarce circular, likely handed out at the Tacoma, WA lectures in October of 1931.

Description:
New York: Columbia University Press, 1941. Slipcase is quite worn, with the lower side being missing, the top part of inner (closed) side torn, and wear to the corners of the outer (open) side. The book itself has minor bumping to spine ends and corners, an old price in pencil on f/ep (66 rupees 8 annas which would have equated to £4 8/8 at the time), but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Looks at the hand- and arm-gestures (hasta prana and samyita) used in classical Indian dance and their meaning. The author, originally from Texas and called Russell Meriwether Hughes, studied dance in India in the 1930s. 100pp, over 200 b&w illustrations showing the different gestures. Also includes a small leaflet for a performance of Indian dance, no date but would be just post WW2.. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Description:
Berkeley, CA: Shambhala, 1985. Translated & Annotated by Alex Wayman 4to size horizontal orange clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 123 pages From dust jacket: "This is the first English translation of one of the most revered and often-used tantric texts in Tibetan Buddhism. While consisting of only 160 verses and some mantra sentences, the work condenses an enormous tantric lore, so much that it garnered exalted mention in the Vimalaprabha - the great commentary on the Kalackra - and is cited a number times in the celebrated tantrist Naropa's Hevajratantra commentary... The English translation (is set) alongside the complete original Sanskrit, with its Tibetan translation." The book has a slightly cocked spine which will likely correct under the weight of a heavy book. There is a slight curl to the bottom corner of the last five or so pages. Jacket has light wear and a deep scratch on front. . Cloth. Good/Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

As the title well explains, the Systema Brahmanicum by the Indologist Paulinus of St. Bartholomew - valuable compendium of Brahmanism - is closely based on the collection of Indica reperta from the famous Borgia Museum in Velletri, profusely illustrated by the engravings. The volume, therefore, can be browsed as a kind of 'exegetical catalog' of the Hindu collection. The ancient Borgia Museum in Velletri, formed between the 17th and 18th centuries by the Roman branch of the Borgia family, was greatly enriched and enlarged in the second half of the 18th century by Cardinal Stefano Borgia (1731 – 1804), a man of vast culture who was a scholar of history and ethnology. The Museum, famous throughout Europe for the variety and the rarity of the reperta as well as… Read More
