Fahrenheit 451

By Bradbury, Ray

Fahrenheit 451 (Ballantine Books, 1953) by Ray Bradbury is a dystopian novel that presents a future American society in which the masses are hedonistic and critical thought through reading is outlawed. Written in the early years of the Cold War, the novel is a critique of what Bradbury saw as issues in American society of the era.

Bradbury combined two of his early short stories, "The Pedestrian" and  "Bright Phoenix," into The Fireman, a novella published in the February 1951 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction. Bradbury's publisher at Ballantine Books then suggested that he expand the work to make into a novel—Fahrenheit 451.

Fahrenheit 451

Bradbury, Ray

NY: Ballantine Books, 1953. Mugnaini, Joseph. First Edition, first hardbound trade issue. Laid in to this copy is Joseph Mugnaini's original preliminary cover art for the novel, which Bradbury personally owned. The watercolor and sketch work features the same elongated human figure dressed in newspapers and surrounded by flames. Mugnaini collaborated with Bradbury to interpret and illustrate the covers and interiors of many of his works, including The October Country, A Medicine for Melancholy, and Twice 22. This, however, is his most famous piece, and this original artwork is entirely unique. Fahrenheit 451 has long been regarded as a high point of the science fiction genre. Written in the peak of McCarthyism, it grapples with the consequences of censorship and the destruction of knowledge. The novel has been celebrated since its first publication. In 1954 it won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and in 2004 it was granted a 1954 Retro Hugo Award, one of only four Retro Hugos ever given. Bound in red cloth with yelow stamping (Currey binding D) with minimal edgewear. Both volume and dust jacket in very fine condition. (Barron 3-31; Pringle 8).

Bradbury, Ray

NY: Ballantine Books, 1953. First edition. One of a likely 50 copies bound in red cloth, stamped in gold, intended for Bradbury's personal use. Card inscribed by the author laid in. Fahrenheit 451-the temperature at which paper burns-has long been regarded as a high point of the science fiction genre. Written in the peak of McCarthyism, it grapples with the consequences of censorship and the destruction of knowledge through a dystopian future in which books have been outlawed and "firemen" burn any they find. Ironically, the novel has faced repeated attempts to censor it by school boards and parents, and even the release of expurgated editions by Ballantine Books. This first edition includes two of Bradbury's short stories, The Playground and And the Rock Cried Out, which are absent in later printings. Minor soiling to lower board and head of text block, else a fine copy. Housed in custom clamshell box in red cloth with black leather spine label. Fahrenheit 451

Bradbury, Ray

New York: Ballantine Books. NF/VG+. 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 1st edition/1st printing, 1953 1st edition. From the collection of famous sci-fi book collector(s) Robert and Diane Yaspan. Signed and Inscribed by the author in red felt-tip pen on a large piece of white paper that is NOT a bookplate (instead a piece of letter-sized stationery trimmed to fit) pasted on the book's front pastedown: 'Mar - 1974 For Robert Yaspan - This copy of the regular trade edition of "451" signed by Ray Bradbury.' Mr. Bradbury was of course differentiati ng between the 1st hardback trade edition owned by Mr. Yaspen vs. the asbestos-covered limited edition issued at the same time. The book is bound in red cloth with yellow printing (Curry binding D, no priority). Straight, clean, tight book with no soiling and no handwriting other than the author's in it, with crisp, clean pages, and with just a mere touch of shelfwear to spine ends/corners and 2 small 'very' slightly darkened cloth areas at the bottom edge of the boards. The price intact ($2.50) dustjacket is clean and crisp with some of the usual fading of the red '451' on the spine (though still quite legible), and with some small, shallow edge chips and tears along its edges, primarily at spine ends, upper back edge and flap fold ends, none affecting any dustjacket lettering or the design (less than it looks like in our photos; there's some flash glare from the DJ protector). The dustjacket is entirely original - no restoration. It is now protected by a clear, removable dustjacket cover. The book is housed in a custom red cloth slipcase dating to the Yaspans in the 1970s that is in excellent condition. Very handsome presentation, and excellent provenance! Made into a very good movie in 1966 by Francois Truffaut, starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner. This book is what really made Mr. Bradbury into a household name.; Signed by Author .

Fahrenheit 451 (The Lettered Presentation Copy)

Ray Bradbury

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1982. Hardcover. Near Fine. Joseph Mugnaini. One of the scarcest of all copies within the limitation of the 2,000 copies signed by both Ray Bradbury and the illustrator Joe Mugnaini. This is a "lettered" copy (letter 'G') and, just below the signatures at the limitation, states in blindstamp: "ONE OF 26 PRESENTATION COPIES, OUT OF SERIES". One can certainly assume that almost all of these Presentation copies were given to close friends and family of Bradbury, Mugnaini and the publisher, and that very few of these "lettered" copies reached the market. This is a very sharp copy to boot. Clean and easily Near Fine in its aluminum boards, with both the cautionary slip ("Fragile: This Book Is Bound in Aluminum -- Sensitive to the touch") and the Monthly Letter of the Limited Editions Club laid-in. Quarto, nicely illustrated thuout by Mugnaini. Also includes a handsome, very sturdy example of the matching aluminum slipcase, with just a touch of very faint rubbing at the panels.
