Description

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Co, 1967. First Edition. Quarter calf. Near Fine. 8vo. Pp. xiii, 220. Frontis. illustration. Pen and ink wildlife illustrations by the author. Bound in three-quarter tan calf over marbled paper covered boards. Five raised bands with titles stamped in gilt on morocco label; gilt decorations on the spine. Beige endpapers, laid-paper preliminaries, bookmark ribbon bound-in. Author inscribed in ink to John Connole "from an old friend" signed and dated Jamestown [Rhode Island] 1967. Edges faintly foxed, boards slightly bowed, leaves crisp and bright. A rich concept: Document the natural wonders within sight of the massive artificial, man-built metropolis of Gotham. Mammalogist, skier, historian, New Jersey native and Jamestown resident Russell F. Peterson (1922-2013) "relates quietly a chronicle of a country year within sight of New York City" with emphasis on the wildlife "in pocket-sized islands of wilderness such as this...being relentlessly pressed." A handsome copy, inscribed by Russell Peterson and handsomely bound by Rhode Island bookbinder James Rigg. .
