About This Item
Capra Press, 1992. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. An association copy, inscribed on the title page in the year of publication to Ehrlich's longtime family housekeeper in Santa Barbara: "for Paulina, with love, Gretel." Paulina is mentioned in Ehrlich's latest book Unsolaced. An interesting association in that it speaks to Ehrlich's relative affluence and the lifestyle that she was perhaps escaping when she struck out for Wyoming where she wrote her classic The Solace of Open Spaces. Ehrlich has also written her phone number. Laid in is a newspaper clipping from the Oct 1 1992 issue of the Santa Barbara Independent, an advertisement for Enrlich's presentation of the book on October 8 at the Fleischmann Auditorium at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. A nice inclusion, but it has left a faint rectangular stain on the half title page, and then a darker one on the inside front cover. Also light wear to edges and spine. Still a nice copy and momento of a hometown visit early in Ehrlich's career.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
