Description

New York: Warner Books,, 2000. First edition, first printing, signed by four contributors on the title page: Octavia Butler, Nisi Shawl, and Tananarive Due; the fourth signature is indecipherable. Dark Matter, the first book in Thomas's groundbreaking anthology series of works by Black writers, won the 2001 World Fantasy Award for Best Anthology. In her introduction, Thomas elucidates her choice of title, comparing the ways in which Black people and their contributions have been "dark matter, invisible to the naked eye; and yet their influence - their gravitational pull on the world around them - would become undeniable". The sticker on the front panel of the jacket attests that this copy was "Autographed for University Bookstore Seattle, Bellevue". Until its closure in 2017, University Bookstore was the oldest and largest independent bookstore in Washington State. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered in red, black paper-covered sides. With dust jacket. Foot of spine and lower corners just bumped, fore edge faintly toned: a near-fine copy in fine, unclipped jacket.
