Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound in hardcover format, generally clean, lightly toned at worst, minimal rubbing to extremities. Black cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn. The book is a "reproduction (with a few added details and the necessary bibliographical apparatus) of four lectures delivered at Cambridge in November 1929," one of the so-called Sander Lectures. Includes consideration of Shelf-marks, Accession-numbers, C. Sale-numbers; D. Book-plates. E. Signatures or initials of the owner, occasionally marked with a stamp or die (e.g. Richard Heber) or replaced by an armorial stamp (as in many Roxburghe books). Covers The Sixteenth Century; The Seventeenth Century; Harley and Sunderland; The Reigns of George I and George II; The Reign of George III; The Duke of Roxburghe and Lord; Spencer; Beckford and his Contemporaries; Heber, Miller, Grenville and Holford; Sir Thomas Phillipps; Lord Ashburnham and Libri; The Fifties and Sixties: Halliwell and; Huth; Bernard Quaritch and his Clients; The Early Twentieth Century; The Present Generation; Index. De Ricci's brief history of English book collecting over four centuries offers guidance, too, as to how to determine provenance. He presents famous collectors such as Sir Thomas Phillips (1792-1872) and the Fourth Earl of Ashbumham (1797-1878), who receive individual chapters. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. ix, 203 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
