Account of the condition and opportunities of life as an American seaman with chapters on the Navy Bill of 1834 and 1835, Petty Officers and their pay, Enlistment and crimping for the navy, England's plan for raising seamen for her navy, The ship Olympia, of New Orleans, Brig Charles Joseph, of Providence, Rules and regulations, Flogging on board the Fairfield, and other topics presented in nineteen chapters. "...the pages are descriptive of evils that actually exist in the naval and merchant service.... the landsman may obtain more "real" information respecting sea-life, than from all the nautical novels the ever issued from the press. The author has given real names and characters..." (Preface). Errata page at rear. Binding with some wear. Some light chipping along edges and seam of cloth and yellow paper. Very light staining and rubbed. Two three inch closed tears at front and back joint of spine. Starting at inside back cover with some linear "sketching" on inside back cover and back endpapers. Binding in overall good-, interior in good condition.
