About This Item
Richmond: Hutchinson, 1977. First Edition. Very good. Hardcover : pp.xv, 286 (2, blank) : 16 leaves of photographs between pp 144 and 145 : green eps :blue papered boards lettered in gilt on the spine : map illustrated dust jacket : full page inscription on verso of ffep [offered with] The Tiger Man of Vietnam : softcover : pp. xi, 356.
Some abrasions to the ffep of Not With Guns Alone, also a small stain and light foxing to fore edge. The copy of The Tiger Man of Vietnam is very good with just a slight softening of the lower corners. Mackay born Australian Army Captain Barry Petersen was sent to Vietnam in 1963 where secretly under the command of the CIA he formed guerrilla squadrons of Montagnard tribesmen and led them against the Viet Cong. He was fearless in battle, won the Military Cross and was worshipped by the hill tribes. He is mentioned in this inscribed copy of Not With Guns Alone but his full story was not told until Walker's book was published in 2009. Major Barry Petersen passed away from cancer in Thailand in 2019.
In 1977 Petersen inscribed this copy of Warner's book to 'Cecilia':
To my dear Cecilia,
Thank you for your help and guidance when I was a fifteen year old callow youth some twenty-eight years ago. I've never forgotten you.
From an aspiring manager of an antiques shop - I ended up being a soldier. I've thoroughly enjoyed soldiering, but never lost my love for antiques.
Denis gives me a brief mention on pages 23 to 26; however, one day I hope to write the full story. When I do you will be one of the first to get a copy of my book.
All the very best for Christmas and the New Year. Take care of yourself and God Bless. There are too few like you.
Love, Barry
