About This Item
Worcester, MA: American Antiquarian Society and The Corner Bookshop, 1947. First Edition. Quarto. In two volumes. 757pp. and [758]-1508pp. The author began his work in the early part of 1913. At the time, he believed though it was a monumental task and there was a need it should only take five years to finish. His plan was to write a brief historical account of the newspapers, with exact date to the year 1820. Each state is represented in alphabetical order. A study of the bibliography shows interesting statistical results. In the period from 1690 to 1820, there were 2120 different newspapers published. He shows that there were 194 newspapers, out of the total of 2120, not a single copy could be located, though they were known to exist. A very useful work for the collector or dealer of newspapers. A near fine set bound in dark blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, off setting to endpapers from dust jackets (not present), the slightest of bumping to corners. An exceptionally nice set.
