London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1837. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Moderate wear to covers, wear to extremities, minor scrapes. Binding square and tight. Light foxing to plates, text otherwise clean and bright. Charming bookplate with tree and axe design (Friedrich Baumfeld), previously affixed to front pastedown, now laid in.. Medium 8vo. 6.75 x 9.625 in. 264 pp. Bound in full contemporary roan, ornamented in blind on upper and lower cover, titled in gilt on spine with four raised bands, all edges gilt. Original binder's ticket, 'F. Westley, BINDER, Friar Street, near Doctor's Commons', to rear pastedown. Illustrated with twenty engraved plates, including frontispiece ('The Irish Hood') and engraved title page ('Sackville Street, Dublin'), from drawings by D. McClise and T. Creswick. 'As we get better acquainted with Russia, however, the character of the work, so far as regards its plain unadorned truths, will, the author is convinced, be better appreciated in England; while, in respect to Russia, he has the consolation to know that smuggled copies are at this moment circulating widely through the empire of the Tsar' (advertisement).
