About This Item
New York: Council For Middle Eastern Affairs Press, 1959. Hardcover. Fine/very good. Hardcover in red cloth. Presumed first and only printing (no statement). xii+ 436 pp. with bibliography, index. Illustrated with photographs and maps. Uncommon. Fine (owners blindstamp title page) in very good dust jacket. A searching study of power politics in the Arab world and of the conflicts between Western interests and Arab nationalism. The author gives a historical and archaeological sutvey of the territory that is now Jordan, from antiquity down to the end of the Ottoman Empire, and the development of the modern era, to the end of 1958. We read here of the Arab revolt of 1916, the battles behind the apportionment of the spoils of World War I, King Abdullah's character and influence revealed through his unhappy relation with the British, his dream of Arab unity, and his clashes with rival Arab leaders. The inner workings of the Arab League emerge from the World War II years; the war with Israel is analyzed in depth, and much more.
