About This Item

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co, 1895. Very Good. London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1895. First Edition. Octavo; publisher's dark maroon cloth, gilt-lettered spine, black glazed endpapers; x,302pp. Moderate wear to cloth margins, most notably at spine ends, spine cloth a bit sunned and gilt dulled, rear hinge cracked but holding, textblock toned from inferior paper quality, 20th-century ownership ex libris to front pastedown of the American diplomat William E. Ryerson, else a Very Good, sound copy overall.

Scarce first edition of a major contribution to the study of socioeconomics by the American historian Brooks Adams (1848-1927). The work follows the rise and fall of civilizations from the Romans to the Middle Ages, the Crusades, the fall of Constantinople, the English Reformation, all the way to the present (1895).
