Description

New York: Oxford University Press, 1990. Hardcover. x, 279p., illus., very good condition in an unclipped and lightly soiled dj. Rufeisen, who was Jewish, passed as a Christian and became a translator for the German police in occupied Poland. He used his position to help hundreds of Jews escape from the Mir ghetto. He was found out, but escaped and found shelter in a convent, where he converted to Catholicism. After the war, he moved to Israel and applied for citizenship under the Law of Return but was denied due to his conversion. He appealed to the Supreme Court, and the case received international attention.
