From the rear cover
This reading of Bernard Shaw focuses on his habit of seeing the world in terms of contraries, a habit related to a basic element in Shaw's view of life: his rejection of absolutes, his distaste for finality. The author examines nine of Shaw's finest plays. In each he finds variations on one underlying theme: the opposing of the world of solid realities and the world of the mind. In each case the characters, action, and ideas are also seen in relation to the whole play.
