The Mixtec Indians of northwestern Oaxaca, Mexico, recorded much of their history in picture manuscripts and were among the greatest of the pre-Columbian artists. They created exquisite works of ceramic, gold, wood, carved bone, delicate sculpture in stone and the finest painting of their time. While Mixtec goods and cultural influences were spreading widely over prehispanic Mesoamerica, the Mixtecs were developing a way of life that gives them a special place in New World cultures.
