Samuel Deane (1733 - 1814) writer, Congregational minister, Harvard graduate; "...A charter member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1790 he published his magnum opus, 'The New England Farmer or Georgical Dictionary'...the first such encyclopedia written and published in the United States...Deane symbolized the union of Christianity with enlightenment ideas that characterized many members of the seaboard elite in late eighteenth-century America. His interest in science and agriculture not only as scholarly pursuits, but as vehicles for national greatness, also typified men such as Benjamin Franklin, Washington, and Thomas Jefferson." (William Pencak in the ANB) Previous owner name of Lothrop Lewis on front endpaper and few penciled bookseller notes opposite. Approx. 5 1/4" x 8 1/2" size; bound in full polished leather with title label on spine. Some edge, tips wear and rubbing to the boards & spine edge flaked; corner of subscriber's list torn away with losses; a couple of pages with closed tears in the text. In good condition.. First Edition. Leather. Good.
