The first separate edition of the notorious first novel of Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy, a controversial love story. The first edition of this work published separately, originally published in the April 1888 issue of 'Lippincott's Monthly Magazine'.'The Quick or the Dead?' concerns a newly widowed woman as she struggles for her passion for her late husband's cousin.When first published this work received a vast amount of criticism, being deemeds as immoral, impure, and unfit to be read. This negative publicity drove sales of the novel, selling over 300,000 copies.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.This is the first novel of Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy. Twenty-four pages of adverts to the rear.Ink inscription of Ellenna Bedle to the recto of the front endpaper, dated October 20th 1888. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities, lighter to the head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Spine is a little faded, with a very small tear to the tail. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Spots to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a couple of light handling marks. Very Good
