A brightly illustrated first edition copy of this travel work on the Rhine, with commentary on the history of the area. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, fifty-three plates, four line maps, and two folding colour maps to the rear. Collated complete. A detailed guide to the Rhine valley and its history, with chapters referencing each section of the river, from the Rhaetic Rhine, through the upper German Rhine, to the lower Meuse and the delta. Written by Sir Halford John Mackinder, an English geographer, academic and politician, regarded as one of the founding fathers of geopolitics and geostrategy. Illustrated by Effie Jardine, an American artist and the wife of William Marion Jardine, an American administrator and educator. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Splits to the cloth at the head and tail of the front joint, with a split to the rear joint. Minor fraying to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplates to the front pastedown and endpaper. Good
