New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1943 Book. Illus. by B & W Photos, Diagram. Very Good. Hardcover. First American Edition Stated. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Original grey cloth over boards with dark green lettering and decoration. Price-clipped orange dustjacket has navy illustration of sword coming out of water, with white lettering. Dustjacket is handsoiled, edgeworn and has small tears at corners. Spine darkened. Some discoloration of endpapers. This is the true story of a tanker ship loaded with gasoline which was part of a 39-ship convoy in 1940 headed to Great Britain from Halifax. A German battleship attacked them, sinking four ships and badly damaging the San Demetrio. The crew escaped in a lifeboat, but sixteen of them returned to the ship two days later and managed to get it running. They sailed without charts or instruments to safety in Ireland. Scarce. 84 pp..
