[no discernible wear to book apart from a bit of age-toning to the edges of the text block, and the previous owner's initials plus the date & place of purchase written in ink along the edge of the rear pastedown (concealed beneath the rear jacket flap); the jacket has some minor wrinkling/puckering at the bottom of the rear panel]. This pastiche adventure begins with Sherlock Holmes, in the third year of his retirement, being coaxed back into activity by his brother Mycroft, who persuades him "to investigate two unexplained, catastrophic train derailments which have caused the deaths of more than forty people," which eventually leads to "strenuous efforts ... to avert an international calamity and to bring to justice an evil assassin." .
