His family moved to London following the edict of Nantz, which was against Protestants in France. The family moved to Philadelphia in 1731, and shortly after he converted to Quakerism. He is described in the Library Company Afro- Americana catalogue (Item 44) as "the colonial anchor-man of the Anglo- American anti-slavery axis."
