About This Item

Newcastle: Printed for the Author By G. Angus, 1817. [3], iv-viii, [1], 2-223pp, [9]. Original marbled paper over boards, recently rebacked with new paper label. Worn to board edges, paper covering boards rubbed, some discolouration. Internally some light foxing and browning, occasional light soiling, title and plates browned with some off setting, but generally tolerably clean. G2 is missing a small piece from the top margin and X4 a piece from the fore edge margin (neither affecting text), a few small tears and nicks to edges, slightly later ownership inscription to ffep. Pages untrimmed. With an engraved frontispiece and four plates, one printed in blue and one folding, list of subscribers at end, including many local to Newcastle. The recipes include several for biscuits, but also how to make a hedgehog using almonds as the bristles, a pack of cards and a Roman pavement in blancemange, a pine apple in Dutch flummery, and a spun sugar beehive. The fourth part is concerned with the building and using of an ice house, with recipes for different types and flavours of ice creams. Bell claims to have been formerly confectioner to their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Duke of York, with this work being "written from a knowledge acquired by a practice of thirty-five years and upwards". Uncommon in commerce, with only this copy appearing in auction records. Cagle 564; Simon BG 189. First Edition. Hardback. Good. 8vo.
