List of maps, list of plates, acknowledgements, list of abbreviations, index: – Persons, Places, Shipping and General. At the beginning of the text there is a map showing the Malay archipelago and Indian Ocean in 1941-1942. The text is illustrated with 16 pages of black and white photography, between pages 82 and 83. There are other maps within the text. Black coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Photographic dustwrapper with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Quoting from the front fold over panel blurb "... When Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942, there was no Dunkirk-type evacuation. Late, hastily planned attempts were, however, made to evacuate women and children and Army nurses and to withdraw certain limited categories of allied servicemen from the island. In the shadow of defeat and surrender, many individuals and small groups also use their own initiative in efforts to escape capture and imprisonment. <snip> based on a wide range of both official and private sources, a remarkable story of escapes and evacuations from Singapore and Malaya is related here." Minor rubbing of the book corners and back strip edges. Light age toning of the text block edges and there is faint offset tanning to the end pages. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with some fading to the lower edge of the front panel, back strip and to the right hand edge of the rear panel. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
