He was an activist for LGBT rights and a public health advocate in the face of the AIDS crisis. Kramer was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his play
The Destiny Of Me (1992).
Some of his best-known film work is on Women in Love (1969), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Kramer wrote with a very aggressive and controversial style, typified in his novel
Faggots (1978). That book garnered very mixed reviews from the gay community because of its shallow portrayal of homosexual relationships, even causing him to be banned from his local grocery store.
