Mark Twain's Autobiography

Twain, Mark [Samuel Langhorne Clemens]

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. First edition, in two volumes (xvi, 368; viii, 365, adverts), with an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Large 8vo with Twain portraits as frontispieces with imprinted tissue guards. In BAL (3537) two states of the first edition are described without concluding which should be assigned precedence, saying, the ‘tentative’ sequence is ‘not firmly established.’ The differences between Variant A and Variant B reside in features of the second volumes, the first volumes being indistinguishable from each other. In particular, the frontispiece tissue guards in Variant A sometimes may be imprinted; whereas the frontispiece tissue guards in Variant B are always imprinted. According to BAL, however, the central distinguishing feature is that Variant A includes two pages of advertising bound in at the end of volume two, followed by a blank; Variant B is free of advertising, with two blank pages at the end of volume two. Our copy matches the description of Variant A in all particulars except one: it has yet to be bound. Since 1924, this copy has been clothed only in publisher’s plain, brown paper wraps. Volume one is identified by a large ‘1’ in red pencil on the wrapper; volume two is marked with a large ‘2’ in ordinary pencil. BAL says, “In advance of publication the publisher sold an unknown number (It could not have been great) of copies in folded sheets to certain antiquarian booksellers and collectors.” This copy of Variant A of the Autobiography would seem to be an example of one of those unbound advance copies, issued in the expectation buyers would have their copies specially bound for their collections. Indeed, the discovery of an advance copy in Variant A format (imprinted tissue guards and two pages of advertising) supports an argument which assigns precedence to Variant A (‘an unknown number’ of unbound copies in Variant A format being produced first, immediately followed by bound copies in the same format). Our copy is housed in a handsome, bespoke double solander case by John Burbidge in dark blue cloth, an echo of the trade binding, with decorative gilt lettering (‘Samuel Clemens, Florida, MO, 1835’ to the cover of volume one and ‘Mark Twain, Stormfield, 1910’ to the cover of volume two, ‘Clemens’ and ‘Twain’ on the case’s spine) and bone fasteners; interior lined with fine marbled paper.

Mark Twain's Autobiography [WITH SLIPCASE]

Twain, Mark

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 755 pp. Two-volume set with dust jackets and scarce slipcase. First edition, first printing of Mark Twain's famous autobiography which has very recently been re-released with copious notes; although many believe Mark Twain wished his autobiography to not be published until 100 years after his death, his friend and literary executor at the time, Albert Bigelow Paine, clearly felt differently as this set was initially published in 1924, only 14 years after his death. It was felt this was sufficient time to honour his actual request that they not be published until "long after" his death. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in navy blue cloth, facsimile signature in gilt on the front boards, gilt lettering on the spines, top edges gilt, frontispiece in each volume a different sepia-toned photogravure of Twain, title pages in red and black; octavo size (approximately 9.25" tall), pagination: Volume I, (i)-xvi, (1)-368; Volume II, (i-iv), 1-365, followed by 2 pages of publisher's ads. Dust jackets are of light blue with midnight blue lettering, the frontispiece from Volume I serving on both jackets as an illustration on the front, publisher's ad on the back panel for "Important Biographies", summary of book on front flap, publisher's ad on back flap. Slipcase also covered in light blue paper, both sides mirror the front of the dustjackets. ___CONDITION: Both volumes are near fine, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, straight corners with a hint of rubbing (if any), and the interiors are clean and bright; there is a slight amount of rubbing to the head and tail of the spines and some foxing to the gutter margins of the endpapers. The fragile dust jackets, which we paired to the books from another set, are good only with substantial wear and some sunning; Volume I is missing the top half of the spine and the back panel is detached from the remainder of the spine; the jacket for Volume II is missing a chip out of the head of the spine. The slipcase is good plus, with all pieces being present; there is overall wear and some soiling, and some of the seams are beginning to split. ___CITATION: BAL #3537; on copyright page: "First Edition" with code letters "H - Y", State A with Vol. 1 frontispiece, printed tissue inserted and Vol. 2, two pages of advertisements followed by a blank leaf. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Mark Twain's Autobiography

TWAIN, Mark

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1924. Hardcover. Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Complete 2-volume set. Small 4to. Blue ribbed cloth with gilt lettering. xvi, 368pp; 365pp, (2pp ads). Top edges gilt. Captioned tissue-guarded frontispieces. Very good. Slightest edgewear only, else internally fine. A tight and handsome second printing ("L-Y"), with two pages of advertisements at close of the second volume. Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a choice autograph addition: Typed Note Signed by ALBERT BIGELOW PAINE and CLARA CLEMENS GABRILOWITSCH, 1p, 6" X 7½", Waycross, GA, 5 December 1935. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Very good. On "Hotel Ware" pictorial letterhead, Paine and Gabrilowitsch write this young admirer that "It pleases me to know that you thought the books I have written are worthy to be added to your collection on our good Saint Mark's 100th birthday. And I am very happy to sign myself...." and Paine signs boldly in full in brown ink, with "Very Sincerely Yours / Clara Clemens / Gabrilowitsch" below his in black ink. Paine (1861-1937) served as Mark Twain's literary executor and authored a massive 3-volume biography of Clemens (1912); he was also a well-known journalist and writer of light fiction. Gabrilowitsch (1874-1962) was Mark Twain's daughter (and protector of his posthumous reputation -- she's listed as copyright holder in this book) as well as a noted singer who performed recitals with her pianist husband, Russian emigrant Ossip Gabrilowitsch (1878-1936). Paine was almost right about the precise centennial of Twain's birth (November 20, not December 5) -- but a fine autograph accompaniment to this controversial memoir and with Twain content to boot. An outstanding set.

MARK TWAIN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Twain, Mark

1924. With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. In Two Volumes. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. 2 pp Vol II undated ads. Original dark blue cloth, with dust jackets. First Edition. This is not so much an autobiography as an unconnected series of thoughts put down over the years, with the stipulation that they not be published until after his death ("I am writing from the grave. On these terms only can a man be approximately frank").~The two volumes are in remarkably fine, bright condition. As for the jackets, the only wear is the slightest of wear at the heads of the spines; the jackets' spines are as usual sunned (from light blue to light brown), and there is also some faint spotting there, possibly from heat(?). Blanck 3537 (state A, with ads in Vol II); McBride p. 254.

Twain, Mark

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1924. Hardcover. Very Good. With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine. Two volumes. Frontispiece portraits. An early printing, with the K-Y code on the copyright page. "When Twain died he left behind a huge mass of unpublished autobiographical writings, as well as the portions of his autobiography that were published in The North American Review in 1906-1907. Twain's concept of autobiography was a mixture of remembrance and commentary of current events, and he ignored chronology, employing a sort of proto-stream-of-consciousness style. Paine edited this collection of Twain's more amiable musings" (from Kevin MacDonnell's Collecting Mark Twain). Original blue cloth binding, with gilt stamping. A very good set.
