Description:
1641 In Praise of Folly Erasmus of Rotterdam Protestant Latin Encomium Moriae

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."
― Erasmus
In 1509, Erasmus composed his famous essay 'In Praise of Folly', or 'Encomium Moraie', which was a satirical attack on superstitions and other unconventional traditions in European society. Since its inception in the early 16th-century, it is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance and helped develop early stages of the Protestant Reformation.
Erasmus uses satire to examine doctrine and corruption within the Catholic Church, even though Erasmus was devoted deeply to Catholicism. He concludes 'In Praise of Folly' with statements of supporting Christian Protestantism. He frequently references Greek mythological creatures and figures.
This 1641 edition was the first published by Maire in Leiden.

Description:
1668 William LAUD Canterbury & John Percy Jesuit Protestant Calvinism Martyr

William Laud was the source and origin of many controversial and contentious arguments between Protestants and Catholics in the 17th-century. He was accused of heresy and false-doctrine by both sects, opposing Catholicism and called an opponent of Puritanism. While Laud was the confidant to the Duke of Buckingham, the Duke hired Jesuit John Percy (also known as John Fisher) as a chaplain. A series of pamphlets and arguments by Laud soon followed.

This treatise, 'A Relation of the Conference,' describes the heated debates and controversial nature of the attitudes between Calvinists and Jesuits. This work is a first-hand account of the conference between Perry and Laud in 1622 discussing the infallibility of the church, doctrine of Calvinism, and the foundations of Scriptures and Creeds.

Description:
1675 Tertullian & Origen Apologetics Early Church Apologetics Pagan Heresy Bible

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."
― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine. He emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.

In the 17th-century, author Petrus Motta, also known as Pierre du Fosse, published an apologetic treatise against paganism and heresy written through the lens of the history of Tertullian and Origen. Motta also describes the state of the church in the 2nd and 3rd centuries with events from both the secular and ecclesiastical world.

1673 Life Saint Facond Bishops of Burgos SPAIN Order of Saint Augustine Italian

Giovanni da San Facondo was a 15th-century Spanish Augustinian monk who served the bishops of Burgos. More than two centuries after his death, Facond was made a saint by Pope Alexander VIII. Little is remembered about the life of Facond; however, author Orazio Quaranta published one of the only 17th-century accounts of Facond's life. Interestingly, this book was published prior to Facond's canonization.

Benjamin Binet's "Pagan Theology" is a rare, 17th-century survey of pagan religions, pagan idols and gods, and the existence of demons and devils. Binet wanted to publish a thorough response to Balthasar Bekker's beliefs on superstitions and powers of witchcraft in Europe. He also discusses and proves the existence of demons by examining non-Christian religions, particularly those found in the Old Testament.

Description:
1656 Privileged Living in PALERMO Sicily Italy Consilia Siculorum Corsetto RARE

Ottavio Corsetto was a wealthy 16th-century Italian lawyer from a noble family in Palermo. While he studied outside of Sicily, he lived most of his life in Palermo studying law and writing works. He was quite accustomed to the culture and living styles in Palermo during 16th-century, so much so that he was able to write multiple works on life in Palermo. Perhaps his greatest was 'Consilia Diversorum Siculorum' – a dissertation on the privileges and high-class living in Palermo. This work, along with a few other dissertations and memoirs, was not published during Corsetto's lifetime. It wasn't until the early 17th-century that this book was finally published.

This 1656 Latin edition was collected and edited by Francesco Baronio, who published it in Palermo.

Description:
1652 John Milton CROMWELL Defensio Execution Charles I Saumaise Royalist London

Claude Saumaise was a 17th-century French scholar known for his editions and commentary of classical works and Greek anthologies. However, he also published a defense of Charles I of England following his execution. Curiously, Saumaise's 'Defensio Regia' takes on a thoroughly royalist agenda, even from a Frenchman, and Charles II even helped publish the book. This book even inspired John Milton who published his own piece of political propaganda that covered the events of Charles I and II.

Milton's "Defensio pro populo Anglicano" was first published in 1651 and was Cromwellian propaganda justifying parliament's decisions during Cromwell's reign.
