Description:
1862 Slave Trade Africa & American Flag Foote Voyages Civil War Slavery Plates

'Africa and the American Flag' is an interesting account of Commander Andrew Foote's exploits in suppressing the African slave trade off the coast of Africa in the early part of the 19th century. The book became an important source for the growing anti-slavery movement in the Unites States at the time.

This fine 1862 edition is Foote's own account of his experience as commander of the Perry off the African coast in the early 1850's, where his dogged attempts to suppress the African slave trade (illegal then under American law) became legendary. His impassioned account here did much to stir the growing public repugnance for the trade in America. This edition includes seven hand tinted steel lithographic plates and a map, with the frontis of the slave trade in action!

1807 1ed Peace Without Dishonor anti Revolutionary WAR Argument Propaganda Ships

A curious early 19th-century London printing of 'Peace Without Dishonour, War Without Hope'. This book is an interesting American portrayal of a farmer's anti-war views of the American Revolution. The authorship of this work is still in question, though scholars attribute it to either John Lowell or Rufus King. This book covers merchant ships and commerce, as well as sea battles between America and Britain – ships such as the USS Chesapeake and the HMS Leopard.

1841 1ed English Efes Dammim Jerusalem Jewish Zaslav Poland Damascus Affair

'Éfés dammîm. A series of conversations at Jerusalem' was written by the famous Jewish scholar Levinsohn. Levinsohn s work was written in response to the blood accusation charge brought against the Jews of Zaslav in Poland charged with killing Christians to use their blood in communion. Levinsohn's purpose was to acquit the Jews before the eyes of Christians, and to save them from the false accusation of using Christian blood for communion. "Efes Dammim" is written dialogically between a patriarch of the Greek Church in Jerusalem, Simias, and the chief rabbi in the Jewish synagogue.

1815 SECRET Memoirs 1ed Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleonic WARS Waterloo Revolution

"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."
– Napoléon Bonaparte

Napoléon Bonaparte was the most prominent Military leader during the French Revolution and led many successful campaigns, dominated European, and global affairs for more than a decade. In the years following the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, the French public was interested in the life of Napoleon and his armies.

Charles Doris, who claimed to have viewed Napoleon from a distance for many years, wrote a biographical sketch of Napoleon, in which he writes out of sympathy for Napoleon – noting his lack of friendships, his barbaric mindset, and his desire only to be victorious in battle. 'Secret Memoirs' as it is known is a rare account of Napoleon's life and military career, published following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.
