Description:
Quintus Curtius Rufus, De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni. Cum annotationibus D. ErasmiFolio. [4], LXXXIX leaves; [10], 124 pages. Late sixteenth (?) century leather; light scuffing, hinges cracked but cords holding tightly; insect damage to text block with loss of text throughout; margins in Orosius trimmed close, affecting title image. First printing of Erasmus' critical edition of Quintus Curtius. This first century Roman biography of Alexander the Great was an early Renaissance bestseller, with editions from at least a dozen printers throughout Europe by 1517. Erasmus brought it as reading material on a voyage to England in 1517, and finding the text incomplete and corrupt, he prepared his own critical edition. This was first published by his friend Strasbourg printer Matthias Schürer in 1518. Erasmus' version proved so popular that five more printers had issued their own editions of his text by 1541; these in turn were reprinted a total of five more times by 1575. This first edition is… Read More

Off-print from Novyi Zhurnal Innostrannoi Literatury, where the novel was printed serially earlier in 1898. Later in 1898 this translation was published by Novyi Zhurnal in a smaller, more conventional book format. At the end of 1898 a different translation was published in a different periodical and then in book format. WorldCat locates this translation only in the smaller format, a single copy in Poland.War of the Worlds has possibly had more influence on Russian literature and culture than any other novel in the English language. At the time of the Revolution, Wells was among the most popular foreign writers in Russia -- second only to Verne. Planetary invasion is a perennial theme in Russian science fiction, with War of the Worlds firmly at the root.

A well used non-institutional copy that has not been messed with. This is the first edition in English of the only parts ever published of Bacon's projected natural history -- his more or less complete natural history of the winds and fragmentary works on the history of life and death and the history of density and rarity. As described in the Dictionary of National Biography, "The section of the Instauratio magna that Bacon most urgently tried to accomplish was the natural histories... In November 1622 he published a volume entitled Historia naturalis et experimentalis ad condendam philosophiam; sive phaenomena universi. It contained the first installment of his natural history project—a natural history of the winds, Historia ventorum—and a plan for five others to be published on a monthly basis.
