Rare books from Book & Pen

1893-1899. George Bell & Sons. Nine Volume set - Vols. I thru VIII plus "Pepysiana". Edited by Henry B. Wheatley, F.S.A. Ivory and tan boards with gold lettering. Condition overall is good. Moderate foxing on inside of front and back covers and some foxing throughout text, mostly on photo plates. Deckle edges show the brown coloring of age. First volume has statement "only 250 copies of this Volume are printed on Large Paper, of which this is No. 146" with the 146 handwritten in ink. Vol. II doesn't have this statement; Vols. III through VIII & "Pepysiana" show the printed statement but no number.

24 Volumes. 1885-1888. J.P. Lippincott Company. Boards are marbled with tan corners and along spine side. Spine is tan with 5 segments; dark red and black titles. Inside boards, endpages and foredges also marbled. Boards show substantial edgewear. Spines are worn - four of the volumes have chips out and are partially detahched on one side. Hinges intact but fragile. pages are tanned with nage, no foxing, a couple of volumes have foredge stains. Text is clean and unmarked.

1947. F.E.Compton and Company. Black boards with green lettering on spine. Light edgewear and scuffing to boards and on some volumes title lettering has faded. Spines are sturdy. Text is clean and unmarked.

1869. Smith, Elder & Co. Boards, endpages and foredges have a brown spotted pattern; boards have burgundy corners and spine with gold lettering, some worn to illegibility. Previous owner's bookplate on front endpages. Bindings in poor condition with separated hinges, disintegrating spines Text throughout is clean and unmarked.

1908. A. W. von Schlegels. Translated by Friedrich Gundolf. Text throughout is clean and unmarked, pages very lightly tanned. Light brown boards are sturdy - showing edgewear and moderate scuffs and stains of age. Spines in poor condition - all but Vols I and IV have been taped either to protect them or to hold them on Vol. I spine is detached and hinges weak. Previous owner's label on front pastedown all volumes. Each volume 10-1/4" x 6-1/2" x 1-3//4"

W. W. Woodward, Philadelphia, Publisher. 1807 First American Edition. Boards intact but show significant edgewear. Binding weakening. Pages unmarked but soiled. End pages discolored. Ex-library sticker inside front cover. Bookstore pencil marking on front endpage. Small bookstore label inside back cover.

Georgia Biographical Association 1920. Text is clean and unmarked. Dark brown boards, embossed front cover, sturdy, showing edgewear. First 15 pages show light foxing and rippling. No DJ.

"Privately Printed for Members of the University Alliance" 1909. 12 Vols. Copy 170 of 1000. Dark red boards with gilt symbols and lettering front boards and spines. Text clean and unmarked. Boards are sturdy, showing light shelf and edgewear, some rubbing to back boards. Deckle edges browned.

Published by Belford, Clarke & Co. between 1875 and 1892. Books are marbled with tan corners and spines. Titles on spine in black. Endpages marbled. Pages are tanned with age, but little foxing; text is clean and unmarked. Boards are scuffed and worn. A handsome set for library or study.

J. B. Lippincott 1864-5. All five volumes are in fair condition. Texts are clean and unmarked. Boards are strong except the front board for volume 5 is detached. The bindings are okay. All volumes show edge wear especially at corners and head and foot of spine. The corner of volume 4 is separated from the spine at the foot for two inches. The covers show small stains. No DJ as issued.

Harper and Brothers circa 1915. All ten volumes are in fair condition with dark green cloth boards with decorative gilt spines. Texts are clean and unmarked. Boards are sturdy. Bindings in Volumes II and IV are weakening and Volume I shows slight separation. Covers show some stains and fading. Edge wear is primarily at spines. Gilt lettering and decoration on spines is faded.

Time-Life Books 1970's. Quarto. Twenty three volume set in very good condition. Texts are clean and unmarked. Boards and bindings are strong with light shelf and edge wear. Three volumes show small white nicks on the spine. No DJs.

1842. "Nouvelle Carte Routiere et Administrative de la FRANCE - toutes les Routes de Poste avec les Distances en Kilometres, Les Chemin de Fer les Canaux de Rivieres navigables ainsi que Les lieux Celebres on Remarquable. Par Charle, Geographe. Paris. Chez Maison, Editeur en France de Richard. Quai des Anonistins, No. 29.1942." Measures 32" x 24". Good condition. Lightly soiled, lines and names unmarked and legible. Some of the panels have separated from backing at bottom edges along fold lines. Slip case is badly worn.

Easton Press 2011. Folio - 18" x 11.25" x 1.625" No.361 of 400 Deluxe Limited Edition with Certificate of Authenticity. English and Latin. Leather bound with gilt lettering and decoration, 8 banded spine. Illustrations are lithographs of those in the 1732 edition. Volume II is like new. Volume I is Near Fine due to a small scar at upper right front corner and faint line through "...hos" in the title on the front cover.

Easton Press 2003. 4to. This book is from "The Collector's Library of Famous Editions". It is leather bound in like new condition. No DJ as issued.
