From the recently auctioned collection of the Goldstone brothers (Steinbeck's bibliographers)--this one with the custom gold bookplate loosely applied to the front endpaper and M.B. Goldstone's penciled signature to the front free endpaper. Near fine in brown cloth and gilt lettering and decorations to the front board and spine. A couple of minor splotches only. A tight and square copy--clean throughout and with the original tissue guard covering the frontispiece. Typical of the high quality of the Goldstone collection. 606 pp plus 4 pp of adv at rear including ad for Johnston's "The Long Roll". A most collectible copy covering Indiana, the mid-west and Indiana politics. Additional pics available.

NEW YORK: DODD, MEAD, 1899. First American Edition 1st Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Howard Pyle. From the recently auctioned collection of famed collectors Homer & M.B. Goldstone (Steinbeck's bibliographers) ---. 2 volumes in decorated blue cloth with gilt top edge, uncut pages and custom paper. This was the limited edition. Vol. 1 has a couple of bumped corners and very minor rubbing--some dustiness to the uncut page ends. Vol II is near fine with only a slightly darkened spine. Each has a miniature frontispiece--one of George Washington--which was contributed by Howard Pyle and "pupils"--each volume is profusely illustrated with dozens of nicely done illustrations. Revolutionary war story in very collectible condition--and from the Adrian and M.B. Goldstone collection.

From the collection of Jean Hersholt--who was the Danish actor who played Heidi's grandfather in the original movie with Shirley Temple in the title role. A fine copy in original hard wrappers, uncut and protected over the years in a custom chemise and slipcase--which Hersholt had custom made. Besides acting, Hersholt was a noted collector and a noted translator of the works of Hans Christian Anderson into English (translated over 150 works). This copy is labeled with Hersholt's custom gold label and signed by him on the label at the top. Goldstone had this copy enclosed in a custom green cloth dustjacket with a small leather title on spine and gilt lettering including the words "First Edition 1879" to bottom cloth spine DJ. Copy and DJ are enclosed in a custom made green morocco slipcase with green matching cloth of the DJ. A very good copy in a near fine unclipped dustjacket--rare to fine in this condition. Signed by the author on the half title page. A famous western writer in the heyday of the genre--this is the retelling of the story of Little Big Horn and Custer's last stand. Henry Allen also wrote as Clay Fisher--and together Will Henry/Clay Fisher had 7 titles made into movies including "McKenna's Gold"--"The Tall Men" and "Tom Horn". Light edgewear on dustjacket with only the slightest of chipping to head and heel of spine-- and no tears. First Edition--Two volume set. Full Morocco with gilt edges all around. Finely decorated exterior in tooled leather and gilt lettering. 5 Raised bands on the spine. A handsome near fine set with a tiny bit of rubbing to the extremities-- and a bit of light foxing to a few pages. Steel engravings to the portraits from full length portraits done by the author with facsimile signatures of the figures (from record) below the portraits. There are 57 engravings on Vol 1 and 62 on Vol 2. Portraits are accompanied by a brief biography penned by Duyckinck---a biographer and historical narrator. She was a prolific author and her books were illustrated by many of the most famous illustrators of the day inlcluding Wyeth and Dixon. This title was illustrated by Anton Otto Fischer. Very collectable for Bower and Illustrators.

This copy is in dark tan cloth with dark brown and silver decorations and lettering to the front board. Spine is decorated in same with gold gilt lettering. A handsome copy with slightly toned cloth spine with tiny specks of splashes at the heel. Original owners name in ink and dated 1894 on front free endpaper. Otherwise a tight and sturdy copy with a strong hinge and binding. A very collectible copy. 406 pp with 4 pp of advertising at the verso.

This is a near flawless fine copy from the first printing in 1900. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to the front board and spine--as well as a depiction of a horse drawn covered wagon on a cloth label to the top front board in cream-- light blue--- and black. This copy has a few small faint splashes to the cloth spine--otherwise mint condition. Tight square and uncompromised--apparently tucked away and unexposed to sunlight and human touch for 110 years. Goldstone collection of early Western Fiction. This copy is in Very Good condition with a very good unclipped ($2.00) dustjacket. There is overall moderate age toning with some minor wear to the extremities, rubbing to the cloth boards and some soiling to the page ends--a well read copy--but also tight and square with no compromise to the binding or spine. The rare dustjacket is bright and colorful, missing some of the paper at the heel of the spine--and with light chipping at the head of the spine and a couple of closed end tears. The verso of the dustjacket has a Paramount Picture advertisement of the movie starring J. Warren Kerrigan and Lois Wilson--.
