Description:
Various publishers, various places 1973-2009. Book. Near Fine. Soft cover. 1st Edition. An archive of over 100 items, from the collection of the late Julian Andrews, a long-term supporter and enthusiast of the artist, Head of the Fine Arts Department of the British Council and the author of the primary reference source 'The Sculpture of David Nash'. The collection comprises over forty (primarily solo) exhibition catalogues from shows all round the UK, Europe, the US, Japan, Korea and Australia, and includes the catalogues for his first three solo shows, each written and designed by Nash; various studies and monographs; circa forty exhibition handbills and private viewing invitation cards; plus several books by Nash himself and various ephemeral bits and pieces. Seven of the items bear the artist's signature or inscription. A signed copy of Julian Andrews' exhaustive reference work is also included. A fascinating and wide-ranging archive which would now be virtually impossible to… Read More

Description:
Mullinger, The Westmeath Examiner [1938]. Book. Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. First edition - limited to 50 copies. 8vo. Ten pages stapled into card wrappers, lightly sunned at edges, with the front wrapper serving as title page. With three pencilled corrections in the author's hand. Illustrated with two fairly poorly reproduced photographs of Tristernagh Abbey, and with the author's initialled complements slip laid-in (this last from the 1970s, to judge from the handwriting). Some superficial creasing, and a tiny touch of spotting to several blank leaves. A very good copy of an extremely scarce pseudonymous publication, one of the most fugitive Betjeman items. A spoof biographical study in verse of Sir John Piers, a notorious bankrupt who was tried in 1807 on charges of criminal conspiracy for making a 'diabolical wager' to seduce Lord Cloncurry's wife. Written whilst Betjeman was staying at Packenham Hall, Ireland with Edward and Christine Longford and printed by the local… Read More

First edition, number 21 of 300 numbered copies, each signed by John Piper. Elephant folio (50" x 40"). 47pp. Original publisher's marbled cloth. Printed on 100% rag Fourdrinier paper especially made for the edition at the Rives-Fure Mill of Arjomari-Prioux in France. With fifty colour and duotone plates showcasing Piper's paintings of Stowe in Buckinghamshire, plus a 'visual index' of thumbnail reproductions. The merest hint of wear to the base of the backstrip, else in fine state. No dust wrapper, as issued. The first fifty copies - of which this is one - were issued with two additional signed prints, but these, alas, are no longer in situ. A quite magnificent book, produced under Rowley Atterbury's Hurtwood Press imprint (Atterbury studied under Berthold Wolpe at Faber and went on to become a pioneer of colour printing and computer… Read More

G.P.Putnam's Sons, London, 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first printing of the first English-language edition. 8vo. 319pp. Oatmeal cloth lettered in green at the spine and upper board, and with the publisher's original green top edge stain now all but vanished. Backstrip lightly tanned and the top edge a little spotted. The free endpapers lightly browned and spotted and with just a touch more spotting to the half-title and to occasional leaf margins. A very good copy in the most uncommon first issue dust wrapper, non-price-clipped (7s. 6d. net) but chipped and a little tanned, with some loss from the spine panel ends, corner tips and top edge. A respectable copy of the first English edition of the author's highly celebrated Great War novel..

Description:
Alfred A.Knopf, London and New York, 1930. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing), issued five months after the US edition. 8vo. 280pp. Blue smooth-weave cloth lettered in red at the spine with a small black-stamped falcon design to the backstrip and to the upper corner of the front board. Publisher's blue top edge stain, very slightly patchy. Just a trace of light bruising to the spine ends and a touch of very light spotting to the fore edge, with a little further spotting to the half-title, title page, and one or two further preliminary and concluding leaves. Free endpapers lightly browned and a tiny bump to the tips of the two lower corners. A touch of very light soiling to occasional leaf margins and, once or twice, to the text block. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. The first and only full-length novel featuring Hammett's celebrated gumshoe Sam Spade. The print runs of the first US and first UK editions are unknown, but considering the relative… Read More

Description:
The Cresset Press, London, 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First edition, printed at the Curwen Press and limited to 450 numbered copies on mould-made paper, plus a further thirty deluxe copies (this one of the 450 examples, but un-numbered). Large 4to. 406pp. Bound in full brown buckram with two red leather spine labels, lettered and bordered in gold (this binding unusual as the 'correct' binding should be white vellum; the fact that this example is un-numbered may suggest that it was intended as a trial or proof copy, or perhaps a file copy). Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A touch of very light spotting to the edges and endpapers, and to very occasional leaf margins. Backstrip ends very gently rubbed. A very good copy of an uncommon and quite delightful production: a tour-de-force collaboration featuring some of the finest wood engravers of the post-Great War period, each one tackling one of the fourteen books classified as apocryphal by the King James Bible. Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). Third impression, issued in November 1929, the same month as the first state and the subsequent second (expurgated) state. This copy signed by the author on the dedication leaf and dated the year after publication. 8vo. 446pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine. With a portrait frontispiece and seven photographs, maps and reproductions. Top edge lightly dust soiled and with a tiny trace of light narrow browning to the free endpapers. A single tiny nick to the cloth at the head of the backstrip. Former owner name and date (1943) neatly inked to the head of the front free endpaper, and with a tiny dealer plate to the base of the front pastedown. Very good indeed in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly marked, soiled, tanned at the spine panel, and split into three parts at the natural folds with some careful subsequent restoration to rejoin them, leaving seven small areas of loss to the spine panel. Laid-in are three… Read More

Description:
Jonathan Cape, London, 1929. Book. Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. First edition, first state, retaining one passage and one poem which so infuriated Siegfried Sassoon that a second state expurgating these elements was immediately issued. Tipped to the title page in a slip of paper bearing the author's inked signature. 8vo. 446pp. Red cloth lettered in gold at the spine. With a portrait frontispiece and seven photographs, maps and reproductions. Top edge dust soiled and very lightly spotted. A little damp marking to the base of the upper board, and a small area of further damp marking to the fore edge, just impacting the margin of half a dozen text leaves. Binding cracked at the title page but still perfectly sound. A little occasional marginal soiling and a narrow strip of light partial toning to the free endpapers. Some bruising to the backstrip ends. A good, bright copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper designed by Len Lye, somewhat dust soiled and darkened, with some… Read More

Coward-McCann Inc., New York [1934]., 1934. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first American edition, printed from the UK sheets. 8vo. 350pp. Brown cloth lettered in silver at the spine. A touch of bruising to the backstrip ends, else a fine copy in slightly dust soiled and nicked non-price-clipped dust wrapper with a dozen quite small areas of edge-loss, and the rear flap detached but included. The first American edition of author's first book, which was issued the same year as the Hogarth Press UK edition and remains even more uncommon (alas, the design of this US dust wrapper is nothing in comparison to the splendid Anthony Butts example which adorned the Hogarth Press edition)..

Description:
Heinemann, London 1955-1975 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. The first three volumes reprints (fourth impression, second impression, and second impression respectively), the remainder first printings. Nine of the first ten volumes are signed by the author on the title pages, and the first ten volumes are also inscribed by him on the front free endpapers, his inscriptions dated in the spring of 1971, prior to the publication of the final two volumes, which accordingly do not bear his penmanship. A very nice set in mostly very good dust wrappers, one of which is price-clipped, and two others clipped and re-priced by the publisher. The wrappers of the first three volumes are a little nicked, chipped and torn. A very nice set of Powell's twelve-volume masterpiece, here considerably enhanced by his signatures to the first ten volumes..
