Description:
London: John Miller, 1819, 1819. THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE PIRATED PRINTING WITH BYRON'S NAME ON THE TITLE PAGE. 1 vol., 20.8mm x 13.8mm, 46pp., with the half-title, complete, extracted, internally clean and bright. Housed in a cloth clamshell box, gilt lettered black morocco spine label. OCLC locates only 8 copies in institutions. Seven in the U.S. and one in the UK. Polidori's famous story was first published in the ''New Monthly Magazine'' for April 1, 1819, shamelessly ascribed to Lord Byron, as was the first issue of the separate printing. In the May edition of New Monthly, much to the readers' surprise, a letter by Dr. John Polidori (Lord Byron's physician) was published. He acknowledged the fact that the tale was based loosely upon a story which Byron had begun and summarily abandoned, and Polidori insisted that The Vampyre was his own work. "As the contents of the New Monthly Magazine were not copyrighted in 1819, anyone was free to publish the contents… Read More

Description:
London: for G. & W. B. Whittaker, 1823, 1823. FIRST EDITION OF HER SECOND NOVEL. 3 vols., 7-3/16" x 4-7/16", bound in 1/2 tan speckled calf, gilt decorated spines, gilt lettered black morocco spine labels, marbled edges, internally clean and bright, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spines fine, a VERY GOOD set. Shelley's second novel, a study of sexual politics, considered by many to be her finest work. "Her creation of Frankenstein at the age of eighteen is a marvel known to many; but few if any are aware that Valperga, her second novel, excels the first almost as much as Alastor surpasses Queen Mab. It is, indeed, her best novel, having a richness of imaginative style and a creative force in combination with a thoroughness of scholarship that are exhibited in none of her other works. Shelley and Godwin enthusiastically recognized its advance beyond Frankenstein, and rightly expected great things of her in the future." (Frederick L. Jones The Letters of Mary… Read More

London: for Richard Bentley, 1695, 1695. SIXTH EDITION. (ii)76pp., complete, quarto, 8-5/8" x 6-1/4", several leaves with untrimmed bottom edges, some toning and foxing to pages, closed tear to F2 mended without loss, a few headlines slightly trimmed but generally good wide margins, ex-libris Viscount Mersey of Bignor Park with book label inside front cover, bound in full red morocco, vertical lettered spine, covers ruled in gilt, gilt dentelles, hinges fine, a VERY GOOD copy of a scarce edition. Wing S-2942; Bartlett 108. Some of Shakespeare's plays were initially published individually as small, slim pamphlets, as opposed to the larger format of the collected plays. Editions of individual plays remained popular throughout the seventeenth century. This edition of Othello was advertised as both an "old" and a "new" play: the title-page mentions performances at the Globe and the Blackfriars theatres (where they were first performed by Shakespeare's company) as… Read More

Charles Ricketts's art nouveau illustrations, were described by W. E. Henley, Wilde's harshest critic, as "about as fin-de-Siecle a business as you ever saw" (Frankel, p. 155). Ricketts considered the designs for the illustrations and for the original vellum binding amongst his best work.
