An extremely scarce and marvelous book by Florence Harrison, about whom very little is known. A collection of charming rhymes by Harrison, illustrated with 22 beautiful tipped in color plates (a few ripples and small edge tears as is common with this book) as well as full page line drawings printed on green paper. Sixty four narrative paintings tell the brutal story of how African men and women were taken from Africa and brought to the New World. Beautiful and heartbreaking. This is one of 350 copies signed by Tom Feelings and housed in a specially designed slip case with a pastedown depicting a slave ship. This copy is also accompanied by an 18 x 24 inch publicity poster of the book, it was folded at one time so is creased vertically & horizontally, two dime-sized stains, with the poster is a note from Atha Tehon who designed the book to Jane Byers Bierhorst. 1987 Dust jacket art plus 7 full-page and 6 endpieces watercolor illustrations from the book "Doctor Coyote: A Native American Aesop's Fables," published by Macmillan in 1987. The full-page jacket art measures 7.5 x 9 inches and the partial-page jacket art measures 3.25 x .3.25 inches. The remaining full-page illustrations measure 6 x 7.75 inches and the remaining partial page illustrations vary in size but each measure approximately 1.75 x 1.75 inches. Artworks included appear on pages 18, 19, 27, 32, 33, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, & 47. Also included are two cards addressed to Jane Byers Bierhorst, who designed the book, from Wendy Watson referring to production of the book, one during and one after. Sendak and the Bierhorsts were friends for many decades. Jane Byers Bierhorst and Sendak taught a class together at Parsons School of Design from 1974 through 1979 and worked on various projects together throughout the years. Contents: A. New York: Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies, 1942 Color printed card covers with blue comb binding, comb with one break, offsetting opposite artwork, as usual. The book originated as a thank you message from a classroom of 5 & 6 year-olds in unoccupied France to the Americans for sending vitamins. Seven watercolors and hand-lettered text tell the tale of a humanized vitamin that makes its journey from the United States to France. Reproduced here, the original French text is accompanied by the English translation by Jeannette A Marandon. The book was sold for $1 at the time for the benefit of the agency's relief efforts for the children of unoccupied France. Rare, especially in such nice condition.. First And Only Edition. Prose and poetry on eleven aspects of Pueblo Indian life, each passage accompanied by a beautiful color illustration after watercolors by Native American artists, including Allan Houser, an Apache who was the great-grandson of Geronimo and Gerald Nailor, a Navajo; both of whom studied at the Santa Fe School (See Bader's "American Picturebooks" pages 164-5). Philadelphia: Penn Publishing, 1928 Black cloth titled in gilt with color pastedown, spine gilt flaked in a few places, gift inscription, else Near Fine; original box is present, but in pieces. Select tales from 1001 Arabian Nights illustrated with 16 tissue-guarded color plates and 20 b&w vignettes. Virginia Sterrett's story is somewhat tragic. She was only able to complete one year of training at the Art Institute of Chicago before dropping out to help care for her ailing mother. Then she was diagnosed wtih tuberculosis at the age of 19, when she also received her first commission from Penn Publishing; to illustrate Old French Fairy Tales. Her illustrations for Arabian Nights represent her final commission before her death at the age of 31. Her work is fanciful, detailed and often compared to that of Kay Nielsen.
