FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. [ii], xvi, 400, including half-title, 18 folding engraved plates (at pp. 164, 180, 186, 194, 206, 212, 230, 242, 290, 300, 326, 328, 368, 384 (4 plates that should have been bound before page 368), 400, contemporary annotation in lower margin of p. viii, contemporary calf, recently rebacked to match with gilt spine and raised bands, morocco label, and corners restored; slight stains on front free end-paper and verso of half-title, but a very good copy with the armorial book-plate of William Lewis Newman on the front paste-down end-paper. In the dedication of the work to "Lord Stanley," Thomas Hatton (fl. 1757 - 1774) notes his family seat is in the "centre of the whole support of this great branch of trade, which is the subject of the following sheets." Large 4to, xi [xii blank], 58, 8 full-page engraved plates of musical instruments, 5 engraved vignettes, contemporary vellum, with the armorial book plate of E. de Blavette on the front paste-down end-paper; fore-margins of first few leaves slightly frayed, slight wear to binding, but generally a very good copy. Francesco Bianchini [1662-1729] was librarian to Cardinal Ottoboni, later Pope Alexander VIII, in Rome. He seems to have been a much respected antiquary who enjoyed considerable Papal patronage. Bianchini's name is often spelled Blanchini, but it seems to be one and the same person. Graesse in his 'Supplement' of 1869 lists the work under Bianchini gives these as alternative spellings for the same person. [?Philadelphia] [c.1800]. These embroideries are possibly the work of Samuel Folwell (1764 - 1813), the American miniaturist, silhouettist, engraver, and hair worker. In any case, they are very much in the style of needlework and embroideries produced by Folwell and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Gebler Folwell. In the first embroidery, Emma sits contentedly under a tree holding a garland of flowers, with a basket of flowers at her feet. She wears a long flowing white gown, and her long curly hair (very much in the style of the 1790s) is decked out with flowers. In the background is a road and gate leading to a farm house. The second picture is a fine example of the iconography of mourning so popular in America after the death of George Washington in 1799. In this one, a forlorn woman sits under a tree in front of a tombstone which reads "In Memory of Emma Corbett." c. 1910. The exterior dimensions are 760 x 620 mm, while the oval portrait itself is 560 x 460 mm. The original painting by Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788) was auctioned at Christie's South Kensington on December 2, 2008, as lot 59. It sold for £103,250, which was, quite literally, more than twenty times the auctioneer's estimate. One point of interest is that Christie's described their painting as showing Thrale as having grey eyes; and they are definitely grey in the Christie's portrait. In the present painting -- copy or otherwise -- Thrale's eyes are hazel. The Pine painting was engraved for the European Magazine in 1786� The online catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery, London, has no reproduction of the original Pine painting, and no reproduction of the present portrait. Kingston: Printed by Stevenson and Aikman, [1802]. 12mo (in 6s), 149 x 92 mms. pp. [iv], 189 [190 - 191 continuation of Index, 192 note and errata, 193- 204 tables, followed by lower corner of one leaf, followed by 11 leaves of notes mostly in pencil, and mostly of names, with occasional sums and calculations, bound in contemporary wallet style sheepskin, with gilt borders on covers, and the name in purple ink of "William Bowyer/ Woollard/ 1887/ June 8," with more purple ink on the title-page and on the verso of the preceding leaf. One of the publishers, William Aikman fled from America during the 1776 Revolution and set up business with another refugee, David Douglass. Thomas Stevenson joined the firm in 1796. One of the most striking features of their almanacs was the use of Hebrew type, page 15 being a "Kalendar Of Months, Sabbaths, and Holidays, which the Hebrews or Jews observed and keep, for the years 5562 and 5563 of the Creation." London, Printed by John Field, one of His Highess's Printers 1658. 2 volumes (?ex 3). 12mo, 113 x 60 mms.,, unpaginated, collating A-Aa12 in volume 1, Bb - P12 Q5 for volume 2, with Q5r, Malachi, (the last of the Old Testament books), with a printed tail-iece, engraved title-page with figures of Moses and Aaron either side of the title, and engraved image of London at London Bridge as extant in 1658, on lower margin, ruled in red throughout, bound in dark red morocco, in the fanfare style, by Queen's Binder A, all edges gilt; 17mm. piece cuat from top margin of front free end-paper, title-pages almost detached at upper margin, tops and bases of spine slightly chipped, corners slightly worn, but a very good, if darkened, copy. A previous owner attributed the binding to the so-called "Queen's Binder A" (William Nott).
