Originally published in 12 parts from 1876-1880, and now bound into a single volume in contemporary green Moroccan leather, with beveled edges, raised spine bands, and gilded lettering and decoration; 121 beautifully colored plates after J. G. Keulemans. Leather covers show scattered scuffs and rubbing, mostly on edges; Gilt remains bright; Title page shows very slight foxing and a few slight smudges; Contents are very clean and intact, and plates are mostly perfect; A few of the plates show very slight foxing and/or very slight smudges near edges and not affecting images; A spectacular copy of this rare title; Photographs available upon request.

London: Printed By W. Bulmer and Co, and Published for the Author. First Edition . Full Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to. Two volumes bound as one, and includes the original very scarce title page and dedication pages for volume II. Volume I was published in 1794 and volume II in 1799. 101 full page, hand colored, illustrations plates, with at least 18 being signed and dated by the artist. Original boards retained, and recased in full polished leather with raised spine bands, gilt stamped lettering and decoration, and hand tooled border over boards. Original hand tooled leather edge inside covers, and marbled end leaves. Bound by J. Bohn, No 31 Frith St., Soho, London. Blank end leaves are slightly soiled. Occasional light smudges and very slight foxing. Occasional very slight offsetting of coloring onto text. Collated and complete, with all plates being very good to near fine. Beautiful and bright. An exceptional example of this very scarce and desirable title.

Calton: T & A D Poyser, 1984. First Edition . Cloth - Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 304 pages, plus eight colour plates by the author. Volume is sold along with the eight original gouache paintings from which the plates were copied. Each painting is on a 10 x 14 inch sheet, though edges have been taped and a clear mylar(?) sheet loosely laid over with boarders showing useable space for copying. Each plate is signed by C. H. Fry and dated 1984. The painting identified to be plate number 2 shows moisture damage at lower left edge not affecting image. This damage was present prior being copied for the book, and the exact damage is seen in the bound plate number 2. Otherwise, paintings remain bright, beautiful, and in fine condition.

London: James Knapton, 1703. First Edition . Full Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 162 pages, followed by index and five pages of publishers' ads. Folding map at frontispiece, plus four tables/maps and ten natural history plates. Vol. III in Captain William Dampier's adventure series stands alone, though a continuation of this work was published six years later. This is a particularly lovely, sound, and complete copy of the scarce first edition. Later full calf binding in contemporary style. Covers show very light rubbing, mostly on lower edges. Map is bright and crisp with strong water mark. Two older inked names are seen at the top of the title page, one dated 1877. Mostly light foxing, though a little heavier on the first six leaves. Otherwise, contents remain crisp and clean.

London: R. H. Porter / Henry Sotheran & Co.. First Edition . Half Leather - Hardbound. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to. Henrik Gronvold. Five volumes in seven, published between 1896 and 1912. Later half red Moroccan leather, with red cloth over boards. Raised spine band and gilt stamped letters. Association Set having previously belonged to Robin Kemp (London, 1871-??) who in 1904 worked with Shelley incorporating his help to classify birds he had gathered in Sierra Leone between 1902 and 1904. Having been sent to Sierra Leone as an accountant with a railway firm, Kemp filled his spare time collecting bird specimens, and soon identified himself as a "Professional Specimen Collector." In addition to two trips to New Zealand, and a later trip to Argentine, Kemp was commissioned by C. D. Rudd to collect in East Africa from 1908-1911. This set has been professionally restored and rebound, mid-20th century. All text leaves have been bleached and cleaned. Text and plate leaves have been trimmed to approx. 12 1/2 x 9 inches. Each part has been separately hardbound with green cloth over spines, and light tan paper over boards. The original covers have been trimmed to approx. 11 x 8 inches and affixed to new covers. The two page prospectus by both Sturms is dated 1840 and bound into the first part. The prospectus cover is affixed to a custom, cloth covered, slipcase that houses all four parts. Pfister / Freud / 12.2.25." The book is further inscribed by Pfister on the blank recto of the frontispiece, " Seimen lieben Freunde / Prof. R. Brandt / In herzlicher Gesinnung / Zurich 24.4.55." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Oskar Pfister (1873-1956) was a Swiss Lutheran minister and lay psychoanalyst born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is perhaps best known for applying psychoanalysis to the science of education, as well as a belief system combining psychoanalytic psychology and theology. In Zurich, he was in close intellectual proximity to Eugen Bleuler and Carl Jung. Title page with 2/3 of page illustrated. There are 71 small circular portrait illustrations, most appearing as emperors and within the first 100 leafs. Leaves I, VIII, and XIIII all show small illustrations (quarter to sixteenth page). Leaves measure approx. 29 x 19 cm (11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Bound in full vellum with raised spine bands and extensive tooling showing scenes and portraits assumed to be significant to the content. Engraved brass clasps are intact, albeit a bit tarnished. Vellum is rubbed and scuffed, and shows a little chipping and wear along edges. A small section near the center of the bottom cover shows a near circular crack, though there is no loosening of any part. Originally published in folio between 1836 and 1844, the three volume set was first reissued in royal octavo from 1848-1850. This is the third octavo edition, with 120 hand colored plates produced by J. T. Bowen whose lithographs were used in all four of the first octavo editions. The lithographs are based upon the original paintings of Charles Bird King, which were destroyed by a fire in 1865 at the Smithsonian where they were exhibited. Original full Moroccan leather covers with blind stamp, and gilt lettering in two of the six spine compartments. Raised spine bands. All edges are gilded. Leather is a bit rubbed and scuffed along edges, mostly lower, and show a few scuffs and light rubbing on joints. Corners are a little worn. Parts I and II ONLY of four parts published under this title, and then expanded to seven parts including Natural History of Uncommon Birds -- Gleanings of Natural History. Parts I and II bound here as a single volume. Page size is 18.25 x 11 inches (approx. 464 x 279 mm). Part I: xxiii pages, followed by 52 paired illustrations and text sheets. Part II: iv pages, followed by paired illustration and text numbered 53-105; then pages 106-126. There is a total of 105 hand-colored copper engravings, of which all but four are birds. Imprint of both parts state 1802, but Zimmer (1926) suggests 1805 as actual publication date. Full green Moroccan leather covers have been professionally rebacked with original spine cover laid on. Elaborate gilt decoration on covers, with interior dentelle. Covers are scuffed and show rubbing and wear along edges. New York: G. P. Putnam & Co., 1855. Full Leather. Very Good+/No Dust Jacket. 4to. Number 21 of an edition of 110 extra-illustrated sets created by the publisher. Complete in five volumes published form 1855 to 1859. Each volume is fully bound in tan Moroccan leather with gilt lettering and decoration on spine, and along the edges both inside and out. Raised spine bands create six compartments. All edges of text are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Proceeding the table of contents, there is a page listing the added illustrations in each volume, with a total number of added plates being 127. Several of the added illustrations show offsetting onto adjacent pages, and there are two small blue ink stains on the frontis portrait of George Washington in Vol. I. Other slight wear is seen. Each volume is housed in a slipcase that has been functional, though not particularly attractive. Due to the weight and size of this set, additional charges may apply for Priority and/or International shipping.

London: Self Published, 1732. Revised . Full Leather. Good/No Dust Jacket. sm. folio. Author revised edition of Volumes I and II which were originally published in 1723, along with Volume III which was first added with the revised editions in 1732. Vol. I is 440 pages, plus two folding maps and 28 plates of which 18 are folding. Vol. II is 422 & 72 pages, plus two folding maps and 17 plates of which 8 are folding. Vol. III is 296 pages, plus ads, plus 9 plates of which one is folding. Original leather covers are scuffed, chipped, and worn. Private library book plate is seen on the front paste downs of all three volumes, as well as a masonic lodge ink stamp on the upper edge of all text blocks. An earlier book plate is seen on the blank verso of the title page of Volume III. Volumes remains fairly tight and contents are generally clean. A few leaves with some edge wear and chips, and there are small fold/crease tears in several of the folding plates/maps.

London: Published By the Author Published from 1884-1886. 144 pages, plus 34 plates. Pages are approx. 11 x 15 inches. Half bound in burgundy leather over spine and corners, and matching burgundy cloth over boards. Raised spine bands, and gilt stamped lettering/decoration on spine. Top edge is gilded. Covers are rubbed and scuffed, though gilt on spine remains bright. Book plate on front paste down. Front free end leaf is detached, though laid in place. End leaves show a few chips and small tears. Older catalog listing has been clipped and affixed to blank fly leaf. Light to moderate foxing throughout, being heaviest on first and last few leaves. Most plates are minimally affected by the foxing, though all plates show some. Despite these faults, all plates have good color and remain bright and attractive. . First Edition. Half Cloth - Hardbound. Fair+/No Dust Jacket. Large 4to.

London: Chatto and Windus, Piccadilly, 1876. The very rare publisher's extra illustrated "Special Copy With Additional Plates." Published in four volumes, each dated 1876. Volumes I and II make up "The Dictionary," while Volumes III and IV make up "General History of Costume in Europe." Pp 527 & 448. Color frontispiece to each volume, plus 323 color plates of which seven are folding, and 123 black and white plates of which 30 are folding. Full burgundy dyed Moroccan leather covers, with exquisite gilt stamped lettering and decoration on spine, both covers, and inside edges of covers. Slightly raised spine bands create six compartments on each spine. All edges of text are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Generally a tight, clean, and attractive set. There is some slight separation of the leather spine covers, small tears, and cracks in the leather along the joint of the covers at the spine.
