Hard bound in red cloth with black titling and gilt illustration that is fading. Edges of red board bevelled and a little frayed. There is no foxing, another plus. I provide all this detail because it is an expensive and sought-after book a collector would like to have in best possible condition, and I believe this is the best on the world-wide web at the moment. I send it insured airmail. He was a well-known author of early B.C. books. This book relates stories of pioneers and pioneer days of Indian troubles, Begbie, Fort Camosun, Fort Simpson in the 1840s, potlatch, and prospecting. FIRST EDITION, solidly bound in green with four-colour illistration to front and gilt to spine. Book probably grades Very Good for age but has a corner bump you see on scan. Top and bottom of spine have the usual wrinkles, but other wise the book has no substantial defects. The frontis still has the full tissue-protection. All 20 plates are presnt and correct with no defects. General mild toning. Overall dull looking

Author (Biographical Note Author) John Forsyth, Provincial Archivist, signed this book on September 18, 1923 as a gift to Mr. Henderson (a local.) But for the signature, I would grade the book Fine or NEAR FINe with gentle paper toning. My copy is in hard cover with bevelled edges. The archives also published a soft-cover version in larger print run

Book has an errata sheet slipped in. It has 8 maps (8 plates) all perfect, all numbered, all protected by a tiussue in which is printed in red the plate number and title, and all dated betwen 1768 and 1792. The book has no writing inside, no dirt, no defects. It is in near fine condition for its age,but has a piece of paper strip missing from top of spine. I highlight that in one of the scans.
The author has signed "from C.F.Newcombe" at the top of the front cover, gifting the book. Newcombe as a noted naturalist and a volunteer at the Provincial Library.

You get both volumes 1 and 2. Both in leather or leather-like binding as new and fresh as the day they were born. Maps diagrams layout of town of Granville, map of Vancouver fire. Privately published in 1932 by Major J.S. Matthews (City Archivist) "Copyright of Provincial Archives of British Columbia). A treasure of a survivor and in perfect gift quality. Some mystery exists over Matthews's work. Each of these volumes has a stereo-signed foreword by Matthews dated March, 1932. (He dies 1970) The foreword of volume 2 reads. "Early Vancouver" Volume Two. Its Reproduction--Five Copies "Early Vancouver, as in 1959.
Research indicates that Volume One was commenced in 1931 and consisted of two books, one in original typescript, which is in the city archives, a carbon copy was presented in 1932 to the Vancouver Public Library. Very good. 215 p. 215 pp plus 8 pages ads at back A treasure with huge coloured pull-out map in perfect condition. This "Colonial Office Lists" started in 1862, and this is one of the very earliest. Moreover it is in magnificent condition, toned of course. The gilt titling and insignia are bright; corner bumps are minimal with no loss of color, tops of spine are undamaged. Ask for scans so as to see the very minor dark marks on front and back boards. Inside front board in a Victorian hand is written "Governor's Office."I also have 1866

From the stacks (non-circulating) of a library, published as a soft cover and later rebound in this hard cover by the library because of its historical importance toi British Columbia. The sub-title is "The Story of Walter Moberly and his share in the making of Vancouver," and the authors are stated to be Noel Robinson and "THE OLD MAN HIMSELF." Walter Moberly (1832–1915) was a civil engineer and surveyor who played a large role in the early exploration and development of British Columbia, including discovering Eagle Pass, now used by the CPR and the trans-Canada highway.
