Description:
Philadelphia: Office of the Indian Rights Association, 1888. Softcover in fair condition. Yellow covers, 114 pages, 22 cm tall, octavo, index. The author, an agent of the Indian Rights Association, wrote this report about his 1887 trip to mission Indians of southern California and to the tribes in the western portion of the Indian Territory(Oklahoma). As requested by President Cleveland and the Secretary of the Interior, Painter included in his report the condition of Indian schools at his several stops. Also as requested, Painter wrote about the advisability of removing some of the tribes in Indian Territory to open their lands to white settlement: "unjust, cruel, disastrous." (page 12) The 1888 publication of this report was soon followed by the first Oklahoma land run in 1889. Fragile front and rear covers are 3/4 detached from the spine. Three small tape mends to the spine reinforce the covers. Light soil to the covers. Internally very good.
