Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1934. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of Volume II. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes between 1933 and 1938. It was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. The first… Read More

Autobiography of distinguished Irish-born American journalist and publisher John Binns (1772-1860), who after repeated jailings in Britain for his political activity sailed for the United States in July of 1801, arriving at Baltimore in September and soon joining Joseph Priestly and Thomas Cooper in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where he published and edited the Argus Republican newspaper (1802-1804), which he was forced to abandon due to inter-party feuding. Upon resettling in Philadelphia, Binns began publication of the influential Democratic Press weekly, which continued until 1829 when party politics again resulted in the closing of his paper. He thence abandoned publishing and devoted himself entirely to his duties as alderman for the City of… Read More

Description:
No dust jacket. The green fabric covered boards show little wear, mainly at the corners and the ends of the spine. Brown and gilt embossed decoration and title on the front cover and spine, with brown printed and embossed publisher's logo on the rear cover. The deckle-edged pages are clean, tight and unmarked. There is the beginning of a hinge split in the front endpaper. The frontispiece appears to be the onlt illustration. The book is an accounting of the time Stephenson and his new wife spent in an abandoned mining camp while on their honeymoon. Examining other copies available online, there appears to be some dispute as to which might be the first edition. I'm not going to make that claim here, but it is clearly in the running. It does seem to be a rare and highly valued edition. Included inside the back cover is a clipping about Stephenson's stay in Silverado, from the San Fransisco Sunday newspaper, dated May 11, 1980.
