A much enlarged edition of a famous argument for commercial and industrial freedom originally published in 1662 (and reissued several times after) as a small volume with the title 'Interest van Holland'. "The only Dutch best selling economics book" if such a thing is possible! "The True interest and political maxims of the Republick of Holland" (the title of the English edition) expresses much of the ideological background of the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century. Wildenberg 1111. Knuttel, Verboden boeken' 4. Carpenter, The economic bestsellers before 1850' 6. Goldsmiths'-Kress 01895.1 Vellum boards are in good, clean condition. slight cracking to binding at the title page, but not significant. The illustrations includes a portrait of La Fontaine as the frontispiece of the first volume, 65 vignettes including 1 on each of the engraved titles, 2 full page vignettes, and 2 woodcut vignettes to the contents page. And of course the 80 plates engraved by Charles Boily from Eisen's compositions. Most of the vignettes are after Choffard. The portrait of La Fontaine is engraved by Macret after Ficquet. Half calf. This has been recently restored, with the original leather sympathetically laid onto a new spine. Mottled boards. Minimal rubbing. Internally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening only. A few minor marks and edgewear to the pages, but nothing to detract from the enjoyment of this copy. Seventh edition, first published in 1662, of "the only Dutch bestseller [in economics], this work is mainly an argument for industrial freedom plus moderate duties" (Carpenter). It went through 13 editions by 1746, including English, French and German translations. The second front free endpaper has the blindstamp of Theodore Jorissen (1833-1899), the Dutch historian and literary scholar, and has four pages of manuscript notes in Dutch on the front free endpapers, probably his, with a few other notes on the rear endpapers in a different hand. Small quarto (142 x 95 mm). Eighteenth-century quarter calf, red morocco label, faded gilt floral motifs to compartments, speckled paper sides, recent calf tips. Engraved title page. Calf and sides a little stripped in places, short split at foot of front joint and head of rear joint though still firm, tiny wear to head of spine, some light damp-staining to contents.
