It went through 13 editions by 1746, including English, French and German translations. The second front free endpaper has the blindstamp of Theodore Jorissen (1833-1899), the Dutch historian and literary scholar, and has four pages of manuscript notes in Dutch on the front free endpapers, probably his, with a few other notes on the rear endpapers in a different hand. Small quarto (142 x 95 mm). Eighteenth-century quarter calf, red morocco label, faded gilt floral motifs to compartments, speckled paper sides, recent calf tips. Engraved title page. Calf and sides a little stripped in places, short split at foot of front joint and head of rear joint though still firm, tiny wear to head of spine, some light damp-staining to contents. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks.
